Sean Sweeney is closing in on his next job, with the San Antonio Spurs assistant coach reportedly finalizing a deal to become the Orlando Magic’s next head coach.
The timing is the sharpest part of the story. Sweeney. 41. is set to take over in Orlando after Jamahl Mosley—who coached the Magic for five seasons—was let go following the playoffs. For now. the Spurs are still in it. and Sweeney will stay in San Antonio for the remainder of the postseason. That includes a Game 7 of the Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night.
In San Antonio, Sweeney’s influence has been clear on one side of the floor. He has spearheaded the Spurs’ defence alongside Coach of the Year finalist Mitch Johnson. helping transform the team into the third-ranked unit on that end behind the efforts of star defenders Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle.
That defensive reputation has followed him through recent seasons. He has served as a lead assistant to a conference finalist in three of the last five seasons, spending four seasons with the Dallas Mavericks before joining San Antonio for the 2025-26 season.
Sweeney’s path to this point started in a different role. The St. Paul, Minn. native began in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets as a video coordinator. before joining the bench as an assistant coach two years later. He also spent time with the Milwaukee Bucks—playing a role in Giannis Antetokounmpo’s development—and later with the Detroit Pistons.
The Orlando job comes with heavy context. Sweeney had interviewed for several head coach openings in recent years and was a finalist for the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns and Pistons over the last two years.
For the Magic, the coaching search produced multiple names. Alongside Sweeney, former Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan and Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jeff Van Gundy were reported as finalists to be the franchise’s 15th head coach.
What Sweeney would inherit is a roster with high-end pieces but a recent track record that Orlando hasn’t been able to shake. The Magic are built around one-time all-star Paolo Banchero, along with Franz Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs. Yet the team is heading into the next chapter after a third consecutive first-round playoff exit.
Mosley’s dismissal followed a season that swung between defensive strength and offensive frustration. Orlando was up 3-1 against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons, only to fall in Game 7, shortly before Mosley was dismissed. During Mosley’s five-season tenure. the Magic ranked among the league’s top defences. but they also repeatedly landed in the conversation as one of the NBA’s weakest offences.
