Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! Streams May 22

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s romantic drama The Bride! will begin streaming on HBO Max on May 22 and premiere the same day at 8 p.m. ET on HBO, alongside an ASL version released by that platform.

When “The Bride!” lands on HBO Max next week, it won’t just arrive as another new title—it’s set to roll out with a prime-time debut the same day.

HBO Max will begin streaming Maggie Gyllenhaal’s romantic drama on May 22. The film will also premiere that day at 8 p.m. ET on HBO, according to a press release.

Gyllenhaal wrote and directed the movie, which stars Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale. It takes its inspiration from the 1935 film “Bride of Frankenstein,” itself based on Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”

Bale plays “Frank,” a lonely man who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask the scientist Dr. Euphronious, portrayed by Annette Bening, to create a companion for him. The story turns on a dark twist: the two revive a murdered young woman, and “The Bride is born.”

The film’s official synopsis describes a spiral into escalating stakes and upheaval: “What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!”

Alongside Buckley and Bale, the cast includes Peter Skarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penelope Cruz. The film opened in theaters in March, setting up this next stage of its run.

HBO Max will also release an American Sign Language (ASL) version of the movie. That performance is by Yamila Davis and is directed by Rosa Lee Timm.

For viewers counting down to the premiere, May 22 marks the day the Chicago drama moves from theaters to screens—complete with a same-day HBO spotlight and an accessible ASL release.

  1. I’m confused, is this the same “Bride” as that Frankenstein thing? Cause the title feels like it should be older, not whatever 1930s Chicago lol.

  2. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale is a random combo but I’ll watch. Also the part about “radical cultural movement” sounds like it’s gonna be woke or something? Idk I didn’t read the whole thing.

  3. Annette Bening as the doctor guy… I mean scientist… right? I swear I saw somewhere it’s based on Mary Shelley but then it says 1935 Bride of Frankenstein so how far back are we going here. Either way, May 22 at 8pm I’ll set a reminder, unless it’s not actually the same movie on both HBO and Max. People always mix that up.
