Beth and Rip Ride Texas Chaos in Dutton Ranch

“Dutton Ranch” swings into Paramount+ as a harsher “Yellowstone” successor, picking up Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler after a Montana fire forces a move to Texas—where Rio Paloma’s power brokers, including Annette Bening’s Beulah Jackson, threaten to turn surviva
Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler don’t get a fresh start in “Dutton Ranch.” After their homestead in Montana burns down, the couple and their adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), relocate to Texas, only to discover Rio Paloma runs on bigger teeth than the ones they left behind.
The series arrives just a few weeks after “Marshals” landed on CBS. and it keeps the bleak. only-allowed-on-streaming-television tone fans associate with Taylor Sheridan’s world.. If “Yellowstone” felt like a pressure cooker. “Dutton Ranch” is built to keep the lid on—starting with the cast most closely tied to the original show.
Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) is still the woman who can make a room feel dangerous. even if she’s mellowed some from her “Yellowstone” finance-era ruthlessness.. In her new chapter, she’s determined to build a life with her husband, Rip, and Carter.. That goal is immediately challenged by what follows the family across the map: trouble keeps showing up at their door.

Reilly’s screen résumé is stacked with familiar names.. She starred opposite Denzel Washington in Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight. ” and she took on major roles in the two Guy Ritchie/Robert Downey Jr.. “Sherlock Holmes” movies.. She also appeared in the sophomore season of “True Detective” and in “A Haunting in Venice.”
Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) enters “Dutton Ranch” with a past that still carries weight.. In “Yellowstone. ” he worked for John Dutton III and acted as a surrogate son to the rancher—an enforcer willing to do whatever it took to keep the ranch’s secrets buried.. Over time, his relationship with Beth helped soften him, leading to their marriage and a “mostly respectable” version of Rip.

Now, his loyalty is locked in to Beth, Carter, and the Dutton Ranch they’re forging in Texas. But the series makes it clear that even when Rip thinks he’s carving out stability, the next complication is already in motion.
Hauser has appeared in projects including Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused. ” John Singleton’s “Higher Learning. ” and Gus Van Sant’s “Good Will Hunting.” His filmography also includes “Pitch Black. ” “2 Fast 2 Furious” for Singleton. and “Olympus Has Fallen. ” plus four movies with Bruce Willis: “Hart’s War. ” “Tears of the Sun. ” “A Good Day to Die Hard. ” and “Acts of Violence.”

The biggest threat to that hoped-for stability comes from Beulah Jackson, played by Annette Bening.. In fictional Rio Paloma. Beulah is the power broker—running a local slaughterhouse that ranchers depend on. striking deals with merchants and restaurants. and fattening the pockets of local politicians.. Beth’s first clash with her is personal and explosive: when Beulah refuses to slaughter some cows for Beth. the standoff escalates between two of Rio Paloma’s most influential women.
Bening has the kind of awards recognition that turns casting news into headline news.. She’s been nominated for five Academy Awards—for “The Grifters” (1990). “American Beauty” (1999). “Being Julia” (2004). “The Kids Are All Right” (2010). and “Nyad” (2023).. Her credits include “Bugsy. ” “Love Affair” (with Warren Beatty). “The American President. ” “Mars Attacks. ” “Open Range. ” “20th Century Woman. ” “Captain Marvel. ” and “Death on the Nile.”

As Beth tries to manage the fallout of moving and building all over again. Everett McKinney. played by Ed Harris. slips into the family’s orbit in a way that feels like fate—or trouble with hooves.. McKinney is a local veterinarian who enters the story when Beth tries to save a mortally wounded horse from an auto accident.. The horse survives under his care. and McKinney becomes part of the Dutton Ranch’s inner circle—though the series hints that the next calamity he’ll face won’t be limited to animals.
Harris, a veteran of stage and screen, has Academy Award nominations for “Apollo 13” (1995), “The Truman Show” (1998), and “The Hours” (2002).. His screen credits include “The Right Stuff. ” “The Abyss. ” “The Firm. ” “Nixon. ” “The Rock. ” “A History of Violence. ” and recent A24 thrillers “Love Lies Bleeding” and “How to Make a Killing.” On television. he appeared on HBO’s prestige sci-fi “Westworld” from 2016 to 2022.

The Texas side of Rio Paloma also brings new faces into the Dutton orbit, including Rob-Will (Jai Courtney). Beulah’s son is shipped off to rehab after something very bad happens in the show’s first episode, and he also has a connection to the next generation—he’s Oreana’s father.
Courtney’s credits include “Jack Reacher” with Tom Cruise and “Terminator: Genisys” with Arnold Schwarzenegger.. He appeared in DC’s “Suicide Squad” and “The Suicide Squad. ” and more recently he has been in “Dangerous Animals.” His television roles include “The Terminal List. ” “American Primeval. ” and “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.”

Carter’s adjustment to Texas is its own kind of test.. Finn Little’s character is older than most kids at school and not immediately popular. even as he settles into ranch life.. He also has a romantic pull toward Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind). and the series makes it clear that feelings won’t stop the chaos from arriving.
Oreana. Beulah’s granddaughter and Rob-Will’s daughter. is a hellraising presence in Rio Paloma who doesn’t fall in line with her family.. Constant squabbles with her kin are part of her routine. and she’s also tangled up with Carter after he intervenes while she’s having a domestic argument with her boyfriend.

Lind has been acting since she was a child, with roles you might recognize from “The Goldbergs,” “Gotham,” and “Tell Me a Story.” She also appeared in “Big Sky,” a show greenlit in the wake of “Yellowstone’s” success, and she recently worked on “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.”
Other new players deepen the sense that Rio Paloma isn’t just dangerous—it’s organized.. Juan Pablo Raba plays Joaquin, Beulah’s adopted son and a fixer for the family.. He’s dressed in Armani. not wranglers. but he still gets his hands dirty. including with Rob-Will’s latest indiscretion and the immediate aftermath.. The show positions Joaquin as something like Rip’s mirror—welcomed into the Dutton-adjacent orbit from a young age—while keeping the question open: how far will his loyalty stretch?

Raba is known internationally for Netflix’s “Narcos,” and his film work includes “Peppermint” with Jennifer Garner and “The Marksman” with Liam Neeson. He also had a stint on Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” as one of the Inhumans.
Marc Menchaca enters with the kind of character arc that tends to haunt a series.. He plays Zachariah. a tragic cowboy recently released from prison. soon hired by Beth and Rip to work on the ranch.. His past unfolds slowly. and the story keeps the details guarded. but the setup is clear: he’s trying to make amends. even if every step might fail.

Menchaca has appeared in “The Alamo,” “The Creator,” “Sick,” and “Companion.” His television roles include “Homeland,” “Ozark,” “Black Mirror,” “Dexter: Resurrection,” and the Stephen King adaptation “The Outsider.”
With a Montana burn driving the family into Texas. “Dutton Ranch” sets its central tension early: Beth and Rip are building something that looks like home. but Rio Paloma is already deciding who gets to control it.. And in a world where power has a price tag and secrets don’t stay buried for long. the next clash feels less like a possibility than a schedule already in motion.
