MAGA Official Makes Bonkers Claim: ‘President Trump Has Basically… Saved The World’
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum on Wednesday resorted to what critics are calling sheer “spin” after being reminded during a satellite interview from the GOP midterm convention how expensive gas has become under President Donald Trump amid his war on Iran.
“From an energy standpoint, let’s just talk about natural gas,” Burgum told Newsmax host Rob Schmitt from the American Airlines Center in Dallas. “Three dollars was what it was in the United States. It’s now 20% below that in parts of our country.”
Burgum went on to continue lauding Trump for this supposed triumph. While natural gas is below $3, the national average price of gasoline as of Thursday is sitting at a whopping $4.27 — not least due to interruptions in the Strait of Hormuz as a result of Trump’s war.
Schmitt interjected: “Yeah, we have $100 a barrel oil right now, or that’s what it hit today, though. And there’s a lot of great things to talk about, the convention is loaded with them. We’ve talked about it the whole show, but we’ve been trying to get gas cheaper.”
“And that’s more difficult than we thought,” Schmitt continued. “Are you worried that these oil prices will continue, as the secretary of the interior? I know you’re in your personal capacity, but that’s not a good thing, going into an election, to have gas this expensive.”
That’s when Burgum went in for what one social media critic called “Pyongyang style” praise.
“Well, it isn’t, but it’s a much better thing to make sure that we don’t have a terrorist group with a nuclear weapon,” he told Schmitt. “The IRGC was so close to having a nuclear weapon. President Trump has basically stopped World War III, saved the world.”
It remains unclear whether the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was as close to developing a nuclear weapon as Trump claimed when launching his war earlier this year, as the president himself said last June that Iran’s key nuclear facilities had been “obliterated.”
Trump notably gave several reasons for launching the war, including some that contradict each other, with a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran confirming in June that Trump has accomplished none of his supposed four main objectives.
Burgum’s glowing praise thus ultimately failed to land with critics, one of whom wrote: “$100 oil staring at him right in the face and Burgum hits the emergency Trump saved the world button. Fuck, even Newsmax wasn’t buying the spin. What exactly did Trump save us from?”
The Iran war has already led to the deaths of at least 18 U.S. military service members and more than 3,000 Iranians, including dozens of children killed in an airstrike on a girls school, resulted in high food and gas prices — and sparked fears of a global energy crisis.
