When Ludwig Kaiser walked back into the spotlight in Mexico City, it wasn’t as the WWE star fans usually recognize. It was as the mask-wearing alter ego El Grande Americano—and the cheers were immediate.
Kaiser, whose real name is Marcel Barthel, returned to the ringworld Friday night for his own “Serenade for El Grande Americano” rally at the Kings League Dome in Mexico City. Video from the event shows El Grande getting visibly emotional, wiping tears from his eye slits as he high-fives with fans.
Behind the scenes, he also appeared in a suit as he geared up for what comes next: a mask vs mask match at Noche de Los Grandes next Saturday.
The night carried a different kind of tension, too. The rally was originally scheduled for Thursday, but it was pushed to Friday after Kaiser’s arrest Wednesday for battery in Orlando, Florida.
In the lead-up to the Mexico event, the allegations have been closely tied to what happened in Florida. Kaiser—who does not wear a mask in WWE—was allegedly described as slugging his neighbor and pushing him to the floor during an argument inside their apartment building. Police say the neighbor called out Kaiser for making out with a woman in front of him. which sparked the confrontation.
The sequence is hard to miss: Kaiser’s Orlando arrest on Wednesday shifted the timing of a headline Mexico City appearance, and by Friday he was standing before a crowd as El Grande Americano—mask, emotion, and all.
