Lane Kiffin’s return to Mississippi has received its latest storyline: Who will start at quarterback for LSU?
The question comes after LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt was listed as “doubtful” on the Tigers’ initial SEC student-athlete availability report that was released on Wednesday, Sept. 16. It remains unclear what type of injury Leavitt has sustained that has him listed as “doubtful” for the top-10 matchup against Mississippi.
Leavitt was one of 10 LSU players included on the report, which includes linebacker Whit Weeks and tight end Trey’Dez Green, both of whom were listed as “probable.”
The Arizona State transfer arrived at LSU this past offseason coming off a season-ending foot injury that required surgery last season with the Sun Devils.
Leavitt struggled at times in LSU’s Week 2 win over Louisiana Tech, turning the ball over three times despite throwing for almost 400 yards. He has four interceptions and two touchdowns in two starts this season in Kiffin’s offense.
The Tigers and Rebels are set for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Saturday, Sept. 19 in Oxford.

Sam Leavitt injury update
Leavitt was listed as “doubtful” on the Tigers’ initial SEC player availability on Wednesday.
It remains unclear what injury Leavitt is dealing with, or when he got injured. Leavitt, who spoke with reporters after his game vs. the Bulldogs, did not indicate he had been hurt in the game.
LSU’s next injury report will be released on Thursday night, followed by one on Friday night. There will then be one final one released 90 minutes before kickoff on Saturday.
Who is LSU’s backup quarterback?
LSU’s backup quarterbacks are Elon transfer Landen Clark and Southern California transfer Husan Longstreet. Clark has seen more snaps as Leavitt’s backup this season, completing 7 of 10 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown through LSU’s first two games of the season. He has also added 42 rushing yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Longstreet did not participate in the Louisiana Tech game.
