Lane Kiffin and LSU football are not done luring former NFL players to Baton Rouge, as the Tigers set their sights on an ex-Broncos CB
Lane Kiffin prides himself on being a troll, both on the internet and during interviews, but that cheekiness is not a far stretch from the audacious approach he takes in his day-to-day business. The new LSU football head coach has already drawn the wrath of the SEC after adding tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, both of whom spent time on NFL teams this summer before being cut. But he is not willing to stop now.
A Louisiana judge formally granted more than 40 athletes, including Wright and Harris, a fifth year of eligibility on Thursday evening. Those two Ole Miss transfers expect to suit up for the Tigers this season, and another former NFL player could eventually join them. LSU is working to sign cornerback Blake Cotton, according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. He spent his senior season with Utah before landing on the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent.
Since Cotton failed to make the team, he is now free to follow the trend and secure a fifth season of college football. A deal is not yet finalized, however, and there are still obstacles to clear before a transfer can officially take place, per Zenitz. Kiffin appears ready to make another move, though.
Considering the SEC is suing him and the university, while also threatening to issue hefty penalties, one might advise the unpredictable HC to exercise some restraint. That is not his style, though. Lane Kiffin is going full throttle in his first year in Baton Rouge.
If the SEC is able to steer around the court ruling and punish the Tigers, a suspension and fines could stymie LSU football and its fearless leader. The program is apparently communicating with the program and closely monitoring the situation, however.
While LSU tries to gauge Greg Sankey’s temperature before Saturday’s season-opening showdown with Clemson, the team is keeping all its options open. Blake Cotton, who began his college career at UC Davis, recorded 22 solo tackles, two tackles for loss and seven passes defended for the Utes in 2025.
