Local Families Rally For Small Charities And Medical Research

A.

Callahan • Our favourite charity is the Brad Wait Foundation in memory of our son who died of brain cancer.

Proceeds from the golf tournaments we held gave over $320,000 to North Shore Hospice, West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation, Lumara Grief And Bereavement Care Society, etc.

The Brad Wait Foundation also holds yearly online auctions to raise funds for high school scholarships for grads who have suffered hardship.

Rick and Helen Wait • Our family is very passionate about “Walk To Make Cystic Fibrosis History”.

Our granddaughter, Reid, was born 13 years ago with C.F.

We and our friends and neighbours have been fundraising for 13 years.

The walk this year is on May 31 at Deer Lake Park.

Over the years, our team, “We Walk With Reid”, has raised thousands of dollars for research.

The new medication, Trikafta, has done wonders for Reid, but is not a cure.

Research is ongoing.

Thank you for any support your readers can give.

Gary Holden • I really like small charities, started by passionate people.

My choice is ACCES, African Canadian Continuing Education Society, started by a White Rock couple in the 1990s.

They provide four-year funding for post-secondary education in the poorest area of Kenya.

They have over 4,000 graduates and accept over 100 new students each year.

It changes not only the life of the lucky student, but also their entire family and community.

They have a robust alumni association and a foundation that ensures their financial longevity.

All donations go to Kenya, the foundation pays the meager expenses in Canada.
