Literary Bench in La Vallette unveiled after restoration
A restored bench linked to Victor Hugo was unveiled in La Vallette, alongside a new Book Nook for readers and visitors.
A restored bench tied to Victor Hugo has been unveiled in La Vallette, turning a familiar seaside spot into a fresh draw for readers and walkers.
Misryoum reports that the bench sits at the bottom of the Cow’s Horn steps and is described as having connections to Hugo, including mentions associated with the area.. Laura Harrison from the Victor Hugo Centre said the setting fits the kind of moments Hugo is said to have enjoyed, from swimming to pausing afterward to dry off in the sun.
In this context, the Literary Bench is more than a piece of outdoor seating. It becomes a storytelling marker, helping people imagine a well-known figure in a place they can still visit.
The unveiling took place during a stop by Harrison for the Guernsey Literary Festival. She said the moment felt personally meaningful, while also reflecting on the broader significance of seeing a local landmark linked to Hugo’s legacy.
Work on the restoration was carried out by Luke Warr, described by Misryoum as stepping in to bring the bench back to life. Warr said being part of the project was rewarding, and that he hoped families would enjoy the space for picnics and relaxed time outdoors.
Why it matters is simple: restoring heritage details like this can make public spaces feel more alive, not just scenic.
As part of the same celebration, the La Vallette Book Nook was also introduced in partnership with the Guille-Alles Library and the Guernsey Literary Festival, as part of the National Year of Reading.. Visitors are invited to browse a selection of books in the outdoor setting, with options to sit and read or take a book away.
The Book Nook is built around a “take a book, share a book” approach meant to support reading, swapping, and conversation. Adam Bayfield of the Guille-Alles Library said the goal is to make reading part of everyday life in a calm, natural environment.
A final detail underlines the ambition behind the project. Misryoum notes that the restored Literary Bench, paired with the Book Nook, is intended to encourage both islanders and visitors to spend more time outdoors and connect with La Vallette’s literary, historical, and natural heritage.
