Liberty rumors: New York’s interest in former 1st round pick cools ahead of WNBA trade deadline

With the WNBA trade deadline this Sunday, one of the team’s that been talked about in terms of potentially making a move is the New York Liberty. The Liberty were thought to be one of the league’s contending teams this season, but have thus far played below expectations. In an attempt to bolster the roster, Liberty reportedly checked in on Connecticut Sun forward Aneesah Morrow, as per Madeline Kenney of The New York Post, but those talks have since cooled.

Aneesah Morrow was supposedly one of several players the Liberty held talks about in the days leading up to the WNBA trade deadline, but a Morrow acquisition now appears to be unlikely. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft, Morrow has fallen out of the rotation with the Sun, and is a prime candidate for a potential move at the deadline.

She’s coming off one of her best games of the season, albeit in a loss to the Washington Mystics on July 28. She finished with a season-high 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in a little over 25 minutes. On the season, she’s appeared in 19 games, including eight starts, while averaging 11.1 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 40.7 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from the 3-point line and 61.9 percent from the free-throw line.

The Liberty are currently 16-12 and in seventh place in the WNBA standings. They’ve won three straight games and are two games behind the No. 4 seed Dallas Wings for homecourt in the opening round of the playoffs. The Liberty have two games left before the trade deadline.
