Jim Leonhard’s message to Buffalo’s defensive front is simple: Ed Oliver won’t just be part of the plan—he’ll be central to it.
The Bills are installing a new defense after this offseason’s coaching change, but Leonhard made clear Oliver is staying in the spotlight. The defensive coordinator sees the disruptive interior presence that has defined Oliver’s time in the league as something he wants to amplify, not replace.
“I think Ed’s going to be really disruptive in this defense, the base defense being more different for him than what it’s been in the past and, in all reality, a little more freedom than he’s had in the past,” Leonhard said via Tim Graham of TheAthletic.com.
Leonhard isn’t talking in vague terms. He’s describing a shift in how Oliver fits into the base defense—something that would change the way Oliver operates day to day. and potentially change what opponents feel on Sundays. For Oliver, that’s the kind of adjustment that can translate into more pressure up front.
Oliver, for his part, said he’s been paying attention to how the Broncos used Zach Allen during the last two years. Leonhard was on Denver’s staff for that span, and Oliver called the possibility of a similar approach “definitely exciting” as he looks ahead to the season.
There’s a bright side, but it’s not without its condition. Oliver missed 14 games last season, and Leonhard’s optimism is tied directly to staying on the field. If Oliver can remain healthy and the Bills’ defensive transition lands the way they hope. Leonhard believes Buffalo’s interior disruption could be in good shape.
