Lego Batman review: co-op power, Arkham echoes

Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight is a polished new Batman-focused entry from Traveller’s Tales, built from a stitched-together mix of film, TV and comic stories. It leans heavily on Arkham-style systems for stealth, traversal and combat, yet keeps the Le

When you settle into Gotham in Lego Batman: Legacy Of The Dark Knight. the game keeps insisting it’s a familiar kind of Batman night out — open world wandering. plenty of secrets. and mission levels that play like Lego’s own take on the Arkham mould.. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel. but it is clearly trying to earn your time. especially once you bring a friend.

Long-term developer Traveller’s Tales is back at the wheel with what is described as the first proper Batman game in over a decade. and it arrives as the first new Lego movie tie-in for four years.. The studio’s approach isn’t brand new — it’s the fourth standalone Lego Batman game. and the character has appeared in three others — yet the execution lands as “slickly made”. with a story contrivance that the review says is weird enough to stay interesting.

The premise doesn’t follow one single Batman version, and it isn’t a direct adaptation either.. Instead. the game is built as “an amalgam of many different versions of Batman”. drawing mainly from the movies. but also TV. animated series. comic books. and other video games.. The opening minutes are said to cram in elements of The Batman. The Animated Series. and Tim Burton’s 1989 movie. blending scenes and lines of dialogue in a way that treats them as though they all belong to one continuity.

That stitched-together method becomes part of the tension of the story.. Robin only appears in two of the movies. and Nightwing is said to be absent entirely. so the game leans on comic book and animated series references to fill in the gaps — particularly for wackier villains like Condiment King and a version of Kite Man influenced by the Harley Quinn show.. The review notes that this approach can leave you with implausible co-op pairings for much of the first third of the game. when the focus involves only Commissioner Gordon and Catwoman.

The way the game runs film plots is another thread that builds friction and amusement at the same time.. The story is said to tackle the movies in more or less chronological order. but it also runs multiple films by the same director concurrently.. After a length sequence riffing on The Killing Joke. the Jack Nicholson Joker reaches the end of the Batman/Batman Returns levels. only to “inexplicably” transform into Heath Ledger. then move on to later parts of the game.

Seven unique playable characters power the gameplay, even though they come with “very different special abilities”.. Despite the Lego framing. the review describes Gotham as an open world filled with secrets and side missions. while much of the main story happens in separate one-off levels — a structure it says is usually how Lego games work. but that also feels similar to Arkham City and Arkham Knight. with an open-world layout that the review calls a “sister title” to those games.

On top of the similarities, Gotham is packed with Riddler puzzles, now joined by a new rival: Cluemaster.. Gliding around and grappling off buildings, the review says, is “all but identical” in feel.. Even though the game is a Lego release. there’s still stealth baked in; it’s purposefully simplistic. but if you get spotted. the number of enemies to deal with increases compared with what you’d face otherwise.

A pattern comes through in how the game handles Batman’s signature moments: the movie mash-ups jump across familiar eras. while the gameplay leans on Arkham-style traversal and predator-style encounters — including overhead ledge takedowns — then returns to Lego’s mission structure with vent hiding for collectibles.
