Leao red card rocks Portugal before World Cup clash

Rafael Leao was sent off for striking an opponent in Portugal’s 2-1 pre-World Cup friendly win over Chile, an incident that leaves Manchester United-linked interest and his World Cup availability in doubt.
Rafael Leao’s night ended not with a goal, but with a red card—an abrupt blow for Portugal on the eve of the World Cup.
In Saturday night’s friendly against Chile. Roberto Martinez’s side—led by captain Cristiano Ronaldo—closed out a 2-1 victory with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Goncalo Guedes. But attention swerved in the moments at the end of the first half when Leao was shown a straight red after an incident that escalated into a heated confrontation involving Chile’s Ivan Roman.
The flashpoint began on the touchline after an altercation between Portugal’s Joao Cancelo and Chile’s Felipe Faundez. Faundez appeared to kick out at Cancelo, triggering a scramble that quickly spread. Roman came to the centre of the confrontation, pushing his head toward Cancelo, before Leao stepped in.
Footage showed Leao pushing Roman twice in the chest and then appearing to do so again toward the throat. When Roman pushed back, Leao then looked to throw a strike that seemed to connect with Roman’s jaw. Roman carried on confronting Leao, and after what appeared to be another push, he hit the deck.
Both players were dismissed. For Leao, the aftermath may not end with the final whistle. It remains unclear whether he faces retrospective action, and that uncertainty hangs over his World Cup participation.
There is one small detail that could matter in any disciplinary review: Leao’s fist was open during the incident, a fact that may be relevant should charges be brought. Still, the sending off itself is a moment Portugal can’t afford to repeat when the tournament is only weeks away.
Leao’s exit from the pitch also adds extra noise to his club situation. Manchester United have monitored him for some time. and Leao has revealed he wants to leave AC Milan this summer. with the Premier League his preferred destination. His contract runs until 2028. but his international stage now risks becoming the place where both his discipline—and his immediate availability—are tested.
Portugal are preparing for the summer’s tournament in North America. and they arrive at it among the favourites to go all the way. Leao is expected to play a key role alongside Champions League-winning duo Joao Neves and Vitinha. but first he has to get through the fallout from a tackle that turned into something far more serious.

So he got a red for just pushing? Seems like refs overreact in friendlies.
I swear these teams are always throwing punches at the end of the half and then calling it “heated confrontation.” If he can’t play the World Cup that’s kinda brutal for Portugal.
Manchester United “linked interest” again… like y’all it’s a friendly, chill. Also the article says his fist was open which sounds like he didn’t even mean it??? But then it says jaw hit?? I’m confused.
Portugal can’t afford to repeat it but somehow Ronaldo still leads like nothing happened lol. If Leao wants to leave AC Milan for the Premier League, of course he’s gonna get suspended right before World Cup. That’s just bad timing.
