Latham’s toss sets pace duel at Lord’s opener

Latham won – Captain Tom Latham chose to bowl first as New Zealand opened the England test series at Lord’s, leaning on a fast attack shaped by injuries, recoveries, and debut factors on both sides.
Partly cloudy skies hovered over Lord’s on Thursday morning, and the first move came quickly: Tom Latham won the toss and chose to unleash New Zealand’s pace attack against England in the test series opener.
New Zealand made its preparation feel deliberate. Fast bowlers Matt Henry. Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke were saved from the three-day warmup win over Ireland in Belfast last week. It wasn’t just workload management—there was history in the decision. Jamieson and O’Rourke. both listed at least 1.97 meters (6-foot-4). are bowling together in a test for the first time after long-term back injuries.
Nathan Smith. who took eight wickets against Ireland. was named as the fourth seamer. completing a front line that carries its own pressure. Glenn Phillips also came into the XI ahead of Mitchell Santner. Santner was passed fit quicker than expected after a shoulder injury, but Phillips got the nod for this opening match.
England’s lineup reflected a different kind of urgency: changes built for momentum and availability. The hosts are debuting recent Italy Twenty20 international Emilio Gay, the in-form Durham opening batter.
In the seam attack, England confirmed Gus Atkinson while Sonny Baker, an uncapped Hampshire pacer, dropped out of the 12. Atkinson’s place puts captain Ben Stokes alongside Josh Tongue and the recalled Ollie Robinson. Robinson’s last test was in 2024.
The match also marks a reset point for England. This is their first test since losing the Ashes series 4-1 in Australia in January.
New Zealand’s XI pairs Latham with Devon Conway and a batting core that includes Kane Williamson, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. Tom Blundell is in behind the stumps, with a bowling group of Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke, supported by Glenn Phillips in the lineup.
England counters with Emilio Gay, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root and Harry Brook in the batting order, plus Jamie Smith. The captain’s role stays with Ben Stokes, while Gus Atkinson, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue lead the pace options. Shoaib Bashir is also included.
By the time play begins, the tension is already tangible: New Zealand’s recovery-shaped pace unit is fresh and ready to test England early, while England’s mix of debut and returns is built to make an early statement at Lord’s—before the series settles into its longer rhythm.

So Latham chose to bowl first… genius or just luck lol
All this “injury recovery” stuff sounds like excuses. If they’re really ready they should’ve warmed up more, Lord’s or not.
Wait I thought Santner was the one who was fit already? Now it’s Phillips in? Cricket lineups change so fast it’s like fantasy football, I can’t keep up. Also isn’t Lord’s in London? Why are they talking about injuries from Belfast like that’s the same pitch.
Emilio Gay debut?? I didn’t even know England had Italy T20 guys, seems random. And Atkinson replaced someone… again… honestly I only care if Stokes bowls fast and not whatever this “reset after Ashes 4-1” means.
