The Last of Us didn’t just hit viewers hard—season 2 left them staring at the screen. bracing for what comes next. The show’s bond-building. heartache. and gut-punching stakes have kept fans glued since it premiered in January 2023. with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey turning Joel and Ellie into characters people can’t forget.

Now, with season 2 in the rearview and rumors swirling around a possible cancellation in June 2026, the question hanging over everything is simple: is season 3 actually coming?

Season 2 premiered on HBO and Max on April 13, 2025, and new episodes rolled out weekly on Sundays at 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT.

The good news for fans: The Last of Us was officially renewed for a season 3 shortly before season 2 premiered. Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin said. “We approached season 2 [trailer below] with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. ” adding that “The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals. thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.” He closed by saying. “We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with season 3.”.

Co-creator Neil Druckmann also pledged his gratitude. saying seeing the series “brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me. ” and crediting Craig Mazin. the HBO partnership. and PlayStation Productions. He added. “On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog. our cast. and crew. thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of The Last of Us.”.

But the season 3 roadmap isn’t just about renewal—it’s also about who’s steering. Neil Druckmann stepped down from his creative duties with the show. He will remain a co-creator and executive producer. In a statement to Deadline. Neil said. “I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3. now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects. including writing and directing our exciting next game. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.”.

That shift landed as fans were already trying to connect the dots around production trouble. The most persistent rumor—whether season 3 was cancelled—was answered with a clear “no.” Production wasn’t cancelled. but it was halted in June 2026. Multiple outlets reported that production logs from the set showed the pause was due to “local disruptions” tied to the World Cup.

HBO and Max’s scheduling window also looks firm. Season 3 is scheduled to be released sometime in 2027. with HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys telling Variety. “The series is definitely planned for 2027.” Bloys also clarified that “Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that.”.

Pascal’s presence has been another worry for viewers, especially after Joel Miller’s death early in season 2. Still, Pedro Pascal continues in the series through flashbacks, and he will appear in season 3—likely only in flashbacks.

Between the June 2026 production pause, Druckmann stepping back from creative duties, and Bloys’ confirmation that plans are still being refined, the picture fans were given is oddly comforting: the story isn’t over, even if the road to getting there has been bumpy.
