When LAPD officers arrived at a Canoga Park condo building on Saturday, the call was supposed to be routine — check on a screaming woman. Instead, video from the aftermath shows a different kind of chaos: about 10 officers milling around as Marie Marseille wails over her 2-year-old dog’s body.
Marseille says the dog, Jameson, was killed after officers responded to her neighbor’s call. LAPD fatally shot Jameson, claiming he rushed at the officers.
Marseille disputes that account. She told FOX 11 that Jameson “wasn’t baring teeth. He wasn’t growling. He wasn’t aggressive. He wasn’t barking. He was just moving towards the officer.”
In the footage, Marseille’s grief is immediate and raw. Neighbors aren’t quiet, either. At one point, a neighbor yelled at the officers, “What is the purpose of all of you?” Another clapped and sarcastically said, “Hey, good job. This is what we pay for. Amazing. Amazing. Good work, guys.”
Moments before the shooting. Marseille had taken a picture of Jameson in a New York Knicks jersey — a detail that has only sharpened the anger in the neighborhood. The neighbor who placed the 911 call later told ABC7 they thought the woman was in trouble. but that she was actually celebrating the Knicks’ win. The neighbor said they feel guilty for calling the cops.
The incident is landing as another painful flashpoint for law enforcement in L.A. County. Last week, Pasadena PD went viral after releasing video of one of their cops accidentally shooting another officer in an alleged “horseplay” incident.
