By the time the May 19 primary reached its deadline. voters across Lane and surrounding counties were weighing the kinds of choices that don’t stay on a ballot for long. After polls closed and ballots moved into counting. results were set to update in two batches—first at 8 p.m. then again at 11 p.m.

That split matters because vote totals can change as election officials publish new numbers. The first batch of Lane County voting numbers was released at 8 p.m., with the complete results of the May 19 primary in Lane County posted afterward.

The primary’s federal contests included the U.S. House race in the 4th Congressional District. with a Democratic primary featuring Monique DeSpain and a Republican primary featuring Stefan Strek. The U.S. Senate race and its state-level attention ran alongside multiple Oregon contests. including a Republican primary for the Oregon State Senate in the 6th Senate District and Democratic primaries for the Oregon State House seats in the 7th House District and the 9th House District Republican primary.

For voters deciding state House primaries, additional Democratic primaries were listed for House District 12, House District 13, and House District 14. House District 13 included Nancy Nathanson (incumbent), with Kathy Cantrell-Damewood also on the ballot. House District 14 listed Julie Fahey (incumbent) against Erik Glass, with the Governor race included as well.

Local races were where the ballot felt closest to daily life. Lane County Commissioner contests were scheduled for Position 1. Position 2. and Position 5—elections that often shape budget priorities and how quickly county services respond to community needs. Eugene City Council races appeared for Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 5, and Ward 6, alongside a Lane County Circuit Court contest for Position 6.

One featured local focus in the primary was the Eugene Water & Electric Board at-large seat. Another was the institutional direction of the city itself, with ballot measures that reached into governance language and administration. Eugene Public Library operations were also on the ballot through an operations levy.

The ballot measures carried their own momentum, especially the initiative voters were asked to weigh: the Watershed Bill of Rights. Alongside that. the ballot included an Oregon gas tax referendum; an Update Eugene city charter to gender neutral language; an Update Eugene city charter requirement that department heads live in city limits; and an OSU Lane County Extension levy.

Parks and emergency services were also represented through multiple levies and measures: Willamalane Parks and Recreation levy. South Lane County Fire & Rescue levy. Lane Fire Authority levy. and school and library decisions including a Siuslaw School District bond. a Fern Ridge Library District levy renewal. and a Dexter Rural Fire Protection District levy renewal.

The counting schedule now puts the next checkpoint in the public eye: after the first 8 p.m. batch was released, the second update was set for 11 p.m., when the remaining results would be published and vote totals could continue to shift.

Lane County voters also had the chance to hear directly from the candidates in the races that drew attention during the run-up to election day. including interviews with Lane commissioner candidates and both sides of the Watershed Bill of Rights initiative.
