Kyle Lowry’s Raptors jersey retirement will be complete with custom honor

Former Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry announced his NBA retirement last month, in July. Though he last played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Lowry signed a one-day ceremonial contract with the Raptors.

However, according to the latest announcement from the Raptors’ official X, formerly Twitter, account, the franchise will honor him with a custom logo.

“This is home, and Toronto will always be home. Together we built something special here, and together we became champions. I always said I would retire as a Raptor, and to be able to do that today means everything to me,” he said earlier in his retirement statement.

The six-time NBA All-Star was a lovable figure in the city and was counted among the greatest players to have played for the Raptors. He will be the second player to have his jersey retired besides Vince Carter in Scotiabank Arena at 40 Bay Street.

Raptors’ general manager and executive vice president Bobby Webster later shared his thoughts after Lowry’s official statement.

“Kyle is the Toronto Raptors – he created an identity for the Raptors that we strive to uphold every time we take the floor, play hard and play to win, for your teammates, for Toronto and for Canada. Put your body on the line… Kyle was the ultimate competitor whose No. 7 will always be remembered with the Raptors’ very first championship, and it’s our honour to raise it to the rafters, where it belongs,” Webster said, via the NBA’s website.

That said, through the nine seasons he played in Toronto, the six-time NBA All-Star averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 601 games, per StatMuse. He also went on to become an NBA champion with the franchise in 2019.
