Deputy Mayor Brian Abdallah addressed participants before the start of the races, speaking about Krista Johnson’s lasting influence on the community. “I knew Krista through my association with the Pembroke Kinsman Club,” he said. “She ran the children’s summer camps for Children and Family Services and she was full of passion and energy and dedication to improving the lives of the youth.” Abdallah said the event continues to reflect the values Johnson championed throughout her life. “Today we honour Krista’s legacy of community, movement and
caring values which have brought us together here year after year,” he said. “Your participation today turns Krista’s passion for healthy, active living into direct support for programs changing lives right here in our community.” He also thanked the many volunteers, sponsors, organizers and participants who make the event possible. Another highlight of the day was the annual School Challenge. This year’s winner was Valour K-12 School, thanks to student participant Lillian Whean. The school will receive $500 to support physical fitness initiatives.

Not gonna lie I only read the part about the $500 and thought that was small, but then I guess it adds up? Either way RIP Krista Johnson. Glad the legacy is still going.
So the deputy mayor was like “I knew her thru the Pembroke Kinsman Club” and now it’s a run every year… which is cool but I keep wondering if Children and Family Services gets the money or the school does. Like does the $500 go to the whole program or just gym stuff at Valour K-12? Kinda confusing.
This is the kind of event that should get way more attention. Also the headline says draws crowds but I saw pics once and it looked kinda packed, so maybe that’s what they mean. I don’t really care about politics but the “caring values” part hits. And Lillian Whean winning?? That name sounds familiar like from other stuff in town lol.
