Knicks aim – New York heads into Game 5 of the NBA Finals against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs with a 3-1 lead, chasing its first championship since 1973 after a historic Game 4 turnaround. Game 5 in Texas will be officiated by Scott Foster, James Capers and
SAN ANTONIO — The Larry O’Brien Trophy is already in the building. The rehearsals for any presentation ceremony, if one is needed, are complete. In Texas, thousands of New York fans have made the trip, chasing the kind of moment that hasn’t arrived for their franchise in 53 years.
On Saturday night, the Knicks have the chance to end the Finals and win their first NBA championship since 1973. They enter Game 5 holding a 3-1 lead over Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
New York’s closeout history this season is hard to ignore. The Knicks are 3-0 in closeout opportunities, winning those games by an average of 39.3 points — and, crucially, all of them have come on the road.
Coach Mike Brown has been pressing a simple message through it all. “We’ve been preaching all year it’s about the next possession, the next possession, the next possession,” Brown said. “We understand any time you try to play a closeout game. the level of desperation — for your opponents — increases (and) the level of desperation for the fans of your opponents is increased. You have to bring your best effort because even if you bring your best effort. it may not happen. especially on the road.”.
That warning hits especially hard after what happened in Game 4. The Knicks got to the brink of a series-ending moment the hard way — rallying from 29 points down to win 107-106. The finish came on an OG Anunoby tip-in with 1.2 seconds left. turning Game 4 into the largest comeback in NBA Finals history and the biggest comeback in any game this season. regular season or playoffs.
San Antonio knows the stakes don’t care about momentum. The Spurs have led each of the four games entering Saturday by double figures, and yet three of those leads have flipped into losses.
Dylan Harper, a Spurs guard, pointed directly at what cannot be allowed. “The biggest thing for us is just can’t take our foot off the gas in a sense,” Harper said. “Can’t get comfortable with a lead. It’s the NBA Finals. Anything could happen, like we just saw. But just at the end of the day, we’ve just got to stay together as a group.”.
The officials assigned for Game 5 are Scott Foster, James Capers and Tyler Ford. Foster and Capers worked Game 1 of the series, while Ford worked Game 2.
If the Spurs find a way to win on Saturday, it won’t be the end. Game 6 would be played Tuesday in New York — back in front of the home crowd that has waited through decades for this stage.
