Klay Thompson returned almost $10 million to Mavericks in buyout

Klay Thompson and the Mavericks were able to agree to a buyout, and it was reported how much money he gave the team back.
The Dallas Mavericks and Klay Thompson were able to agree on a buyout over the week as the sharpshooter is set to sign with the Miami Heat once he clears waivers. It was uncertain how much Thompson gave the Mavericks back in the buyout agreement, and Michael Scotto of Hoopshype was one of the first to have the number.
“Klay Thompson gave back roughly $9.8 million in his buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks, league sources told Hoopshype. As widely reported, Thompson now plans to join the Miami Heat once he clears waivers,” Scotto wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Thompson was in the final year of his contract with the Mavericks and was set to make $17.5 million. He’s supposed to sign a two-year, $13 million deal with the Heat.
There had been rumors floating around over the offseason that Thompson could possibly be traded or bought out by the Mavericks. The Heat were the one team that had interest in adding Thompson to their team, as they looked to add more shooting around Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Thompson was a reliable shooter for the Mavericks in his two seasons with the team, as he averaged 12.9 points and shot 38.7% from the 3-point line.
It’s been a lot that has happened with the Mavericks since Thompson joined the Mavericks. Luka Doncic was traded for Anthony Davis, and then Davis was traded to the Washington Wizards. Nico Harrison was relieved of his duties, and the Mavericks hired Mike Schmitz as their general manager, with Masai Ujiri becoming the president.
Jason Kidd was also fired after the season, and Dusty May is now the head coach. It makes sense why the Mavericks may have wanted to move on from Thompson as they look to go younger and build around Cooper Flagg.
Thompson now gets the chance to play on a contending team in Miami and should have a huge role from Day 1.
