Kingston braces for variable summer weather as El Niño builds

“The global pattern is in a state of flux,” Weather Network meteorologist Doug Gillham said in the national outlook. “That’s why it’s more difficult to lock into a pattern.” A summer of swings, not extremes, is expected, according to Carter. In eastern Ontario, temperatures are expected to land near seasonal averages by the end of the summer — but not in a straight line. Carter said highs will more often fall in the mid-to-upper 20s rather than consistently exceeding 30 C, offering what he described

as a more “comfortable” season overall. “It’s still going to be summer,” he said. “But maybe you’re not running your air conditioning day in and day out through July and August.” Forecasters also expect more days with showers and thunderstorms across southern and eastern Ontario, though not necessarily widespread or prolonged rainfall. Summer precipitation in the region is typically driven by localized storms, meaning conditions can vary sharply even within a single community.

  1. I saw El Niño and immediately thought it’s gonna be record storms again. But they’re saying “near seasonal”?? That seems like a lie or I just don’t get weather people. Either way my AC is already on standby.

  2. El Niño always gets blamed for everything. Like last year it was “El Niño” too right? And then it rains for one day and everyone acts surprised. I’m in Kingston and I swear it’ll rain exactly when I’m not ready.

  3. “Swings, not extremes” sounds nice but they also said more showers and thunderstorms. So are we supposed to run the AC less but also keep an umbrella?? Every forecast I read is basically “it depends” and then it’s muggy anyway. Also when they say mid-to-upper 20s like that’s comfy… I don’t know, 25 feels hot after work.
