Jimmy Kimmel didn’t wait for the summer to arrive before putting the studio on notice. During Thursday’s monologue, he looked right at Guillermo Rodriguez and told his audience to pay attention.
“ Well, I hope you’re paying attention this summer because I will be taking the next two months off,” Kimmel said. “This time voluntarily.”
Then he did what late-night hosts always do when they’re stepping away: he pointed to who would keep the lights—and the laughs—on while he’s gone.
Kimmel said the guest-host rotation would begin with Tiffany Haddish, followed by Colman Domingo, Ike Barinholtz, Anthony Anderson, and Jelly Roll. He also saved a headline moment for the end, calling it a “special treat” for the “commander-in-chief.”
“And, as a special treat for our commander-in-chief, I asked one of his all-time favorites, Rosie O’Donnell, to be here to keep the hits coming,” he said as the audience erupted into applause.
Before moving on, Kimmel slid in a message directly at President-elect Donald Trump.
“And all I ask in return, Mr. President, is that you don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone,” he said.
O’Donnell’s appearance will be the first time she steps into hosting duties on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”—though her experience in daytime and primetime talk has been extensive. She led her own show. “The Rosie O’Donnell Show. ” for six seasons from 1996 to 2002. and she served as a co-host on “The View” for two separate stints.
ABC has clarified the schedule for the opening stretch, with Haddish set to host the week of July 6. After her week, Anderson, Barinholtz, Domingo, and Roll will follow, per the network.
The choice of O’Donnell also lands with extra weight. Kimmel’s guest-host announcement comes amid O’Donnell’s nearly two-decade feud with Trump, a long-running exchange that has included jabs between the actress and the president over the years.
“Jimmy Kimmel Live!” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC.
