Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video, and the numbers that hurt it at the box office are starting to look different with a new audience finding it nearly two years later.
But even as Chapter 1 continues to gather momentum in living rooms, the follow-up that was meant to arrive fast is still waiting in the wings. New Line Cinema had originally planned Horizon: Chapter 2 for August 16, 2024—just months after Chapter 1 hit theaters on June 28, 2024.
That plan changed after Chapter 1’s run. In the United States, the film grossed $29 million, and worldwide it totaled $38 million. New Line Cinema then decided to delay the release of Chapter 2, with the studio announcing the move on July 10, 2024.
“Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema have decided not to release Horizon: Chapter 2 on August 16 in order to give audiences a greater opportunity to discover the first installment of Horizon over the coming weeks. including on PVOD and Max. We thank our exhibition partners for their continued support as moviegoers across the U.S. discover the film in its theatrical run.”.
Territory Pictures followed with its own explanation, centering the issue on timing—on making sure more people saw the first chapter before the second arrived.
“The audience response to Horizon, and enthusiasm for seeing our story continue in Horizon 2, has been incredibly gratifying. Kevin made this film for people who love movies and who wanted to go on a journey. The support that we have received from film fans. and the theater owners. as they experience the first chapter of this saga only serves to reinforce our belief in them and the films that we have made. and we thank them for coming on board for the ride. We welcome the opportunity for that window to be expanded as we know it will only serve to enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2.”.
The original series concept had been bigger—Horizon was intended as a four-movie run. with the first two chapters released within months of each other. Instead, Chapter 2’s journey moved away from that early calendar. It still found audiences in festivals: the film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 7. 2024. and it was screened at the Santa Barbara Film Festival on February 7. 2025.
The delay, the festival appearances, and the new streaming life for Chapter 1 all line up with one unresolved point: Chapter 2 still does not have a release date.
Costner, though, has made it clear he wants the saga to continue. In November 2024, he told Deadline, “I’m hoping, I’m dreaming, I’m meeting all the billionaires that we all hear about — they’re all hiding in the shadows.”
