Kentucky man held after Massachusetts gun shop robbery

Aaron Woodrum, 33, was arrested Monday and charged after a weekend break-in at Liberty Ordnance Supply in Norwood, Massachusetts, where police say firearms were taken from display cases and evidence led investigators to a home on Neponset Street.

A Norwood firearms shop didn’t go quiet after the lights went out. The owner stayed on surveillance cameras during the break-in—then watched a masked suspect move through the store shortly before midnight Sunday.

That footage and the response that followed helped investigators identify the man they say carried out the robbery. Aaron Woodrum, 33, was arrested Monday in connection with a weekend break-in at Liberty Ordnance Supply, located at 100 Access Road in Norwood, police said.

Police said the break-in happened around 11:40 p.m. Sunday. The shop’s owner reported seeing a suspect wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, a mask, and gloves take firearms from display cases.

Officers from both the evening and overnight shifts set up a perimeter and called for backup. K-9 units and the Massachusetts State Police arrived to assist, according to the Norwood Police Department. During a search, police reported finding damage to the building consistent with forced entry.

A police dog tracked a scent to the backyard of a home on Neponset Street, where investigators found stolen firearms and clothing they believed the suspect wore during the robbery, authorities said.

After analyzing surveillance video and other evidence, police said investigators identified the suspect as Woodrum. Authorities said Woodrum had visited the store several days before the break-in.

Woodrum was taken into custody Monday morning after officers encountered him at a local hotel while responding to a separate report of a person refusing to leave the premises, police said.

Police Chief Christopher Padden commended the efforts of the responding officers and K-9 teams. “The rapid response overnight. combined with strong investigative work. allowed officers to quickly identify and apprehend a suspect while also recovering the stolen firearms. ” he said in a statement. “We are grateful to our local and state law enforcement partners for their assistance.”.

Court documents show Woodrum is charged with several felonies: breaking and entering a firearm distributor; larceny of a firearm (four counts); vandalizing property (two counts); and breaking and entering a building during the nighttime with the intent to commit a felony. He is also charged with a misdemeanor larceny under $1,200.

Police said the investigation remains active and further charges are anticipated. Investigators are reviewing Woodrum’s activities in the days preceding the robbery.

Woodrum’s arraignment took place Monday in Dedham District Court. Court documents say he was ordered to be held at the Norfolk County Correctional Center after failing to post a $100,000 cash bail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for June 17.
