Katie Taylor’s Croke Park fight arrives after family deaths

Katie Taylor has explained how the confirmation of her fight at Croke Park has come at a time when her family really needed a boost. Taylor’s long awaited date with destiny at Croke Park was finally confirmed on Friday afternoon, with the legendary Irish boxer set to take on Flora Pilli of France in bout for the Undisputed Super-Lightweight Championship in what will be the final fight of an extraordinary career. The Bray Bomber and promoter Eddie Hearn have been lobbying the GAA for years
and have finally gotten the deal over the line in what Katie has described as the ultimate dream come true. And the news comes at a time when the Taylor clan were in desperate need of a pick-me-up, as she told reporters on Friday. “In the middle of all this, I also lost my sister-in-law, my grandmother, as well, and [it’s been a] very, very tough season. “And this does give the whole family a bit of a boost, I think, having this Croke Park
moment.’ It has been an incredible decade for the 2012 Olympic champion, who took a punt by turning professional in 2016 and signing up with Eddie Hearn after a trailblazing amateur career. “When I first had that meeting with Eddie [Hearn] 10 years ago, women’s professional boxing was pretty much non-existent. “We were making pennies, and here we are 10 years later; look at the progress that’s been made. It’s been amazing progress in one generation, and I’m so proud of where it’s gone.” Click
