For Garter Day, Kate Middleton and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, didn’t just attend the celebrations side by side—they looked like they were genuinely enjoying the moment.

Body language expert Darren Stanton said the future queen of England and Prince Edward’s wife appeared “extremely chummy” while attending the Most Noble Order of the Garter celebrations. “Kate and Sophie clearly have a fantastic friendship,” Stanton said, adding that “all of their gestures suggest a genuine relationship.”.

Stanton focused on the details: he described “incredibly broad smiles. ” raised cheeks. eyes that seemed “engaged. ” and visible signs of warmth like “crows’ feet and laugh lines.” He also pointed to how they interacted with each other. saying they “turn towards each other. matching and mirroring each other’s gestures and emotions. ” which he described as showing “a really close bond.”.

Those observations matter because royal attendance is often read like a performance. Stanton argued that people sometimes miss the ordinary reality underneath it. “It is always interesting to look at events when the royal family attend together. ” he said. before warning that public impressions can blur the truth of personal relationships. “I think sometimes people mistake the relationship that they have with each other,” Stanton added. “Because they work with each other and people call them The Firm. people forget that behind it all. they are a family like any other.”.

The same idea—family closeness, not just formal duty—has been echoed by journalist Jennie Bond. Bond said it can be hard to remember that Sophie is Kate’s aunt by marriage. describing them as feeling more like sisters. “It’s sometimes hard to remember that Sophie is Kate’s aunt by marriage because they seem more like sisters. ” Bond told The Mirror via Daily Express. Bond also characterized their connection as grounded in mutual affection. saying: “I think they have a real mutual affection and a firm friendship.”.

Bond also framed Sophie’s role as something more specific than companionship. She described Sophie as a “mentor” to Kate. pointing to how both women understand the challenges that can come with marrying into the monarchy. “Sophie has been there for Kate from the start as a mentor and perhaps someone she can share the peculiar ups and downs of royal life with. ” Bond noted.

For Bond, their closeness is also tied to shared experience—Kate and Sophie “have come from middle-class backgrounds to assume uniquely senior roles in the life of the nation,” she emphasized.

As the royals continue to plan for what comes next, Bond said their support network matters too. With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle living in America. Bond suggested Kate and Prince William may look toward Sophie and Prince Edward as they prepare for the possibility of taking over “The Firm.” She said. “I think William will be very grateful to have Edward and Sophie there when the time comes for him to be king. ” calling out the value of having family ready to share the “considerable workload.” Bond added that without Harry “to lean on. ” William will appreciate “the support of his uncle and aunt and be grateful that they are willing to bear their share.”.
