Western Kentucky offensive lineman Karsten Upchurch suffered a scary injury during the fourth quarter of the Hilltoppers’ game against Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 19.
In the midst of a Western Kentucky drive in the fourth quarter, Upchurch appeared to have taken a hit to his helmet that immediately dropped him to the ground at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana. He spent an extended amount of time on the ground as he was being tended to by the medical staff.
Both teams were seen on the broadcast taking a knee as Upchurch was tended to. He was eventually carted off the field.
“They removed (Upchurch’s) shoulder pads and his undershirt and then brought out a neck brace,” the Peacock broadcast said. “They have now put (it) around his neck. They are getting the stretcher ready there as you can see. Did appear he took a blow to the head as he was standing up and he just kind of rocked down to the turf and it’s been several minutes now.”
Western Kentucky went on to lose 38-0 to Indiana on Saturday, dropping to 0-3 on the season.

Upchurch sustained an apparent upper-body injury in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s non-conference game against Indiana after taking a hit to the head. The game was delayed while he was being tended to by members of the medical staff.
As he was being carted off the field, broadcasters noted that Upchurch appeared to be moving his arms.
