Kansas basketball news: Jayhawks hire ex-Rockets front office member to executive director role

Kansas is bringing professional front office experience into its athletic department. The Jayhawks are hiring Sam Strantz, a member of the Houston Rockets’ front office, as the school’s new Executive Director of Front Office Strategy and Operations, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

The position functions essentially as a centralized general manager for the entire athletic department, with Strantz set to report directly to athletic director Travis Goff.

Strantz’s new role will focus on building out a front office model designed to add value across Kansas’ revenue-generating programs, a structure increasingly common across college athletics as departments adapt to the modern landscape of NIL and revenue sharing. Goff, who has led the department since April 2021 after previous stops at Northwestern and Tulane, is betting that professional sports expertise can help Kansas navigate that shifting terrain.

Strantz joins from Houston, where he had served as the Rockets’ Senior Team Counsel since July 2024.

According to his LinkedIn profile, his work centered on advising the organization at the intersection of basketball operations and legal strategy, supporting front-office decision-making, roster construction, and transaction execution, exactly the kind of skill set Kansas hopes translates to running a college athletic department.

The move fits a broader trend of college programs looking to professional sports front offices for structure and expertise as the sport professionalizes further. Kansas basketball enters the 2026-27 season, Bill Self’s 24th at the helm, with the program holding a 634-167 overall record, including a 299-91 mark in Big 12 play, since his arrival.

With NIL, the transfer portal, and revenue sharing reshaping how college athletic departments operate, Kansas is betting that a front-office structure borrowed directly from professional sports can help keep its programs competitive both on the court and financially.
