Lions Hall hosts June 21 fly tying lessons

Since I started the free fly tying lessons in 2013 here in Campbell River, I usually chose dates between late November through mid April at the Library and Senior Centre. Last May I was looking at extending fly tying at another venue. The Willow Point Lions club members had a meeting and mentioned to me that the hall would be available for Fathers Day, Sunday, June 21. The hall is equipped with a kitchen, stage and there is plenty of floor space for tables. It
is ideal for fly tying with space for supplies and tables arranged for people to come in and learn the art of fly tying. I had a chance to meet new people who recently moved to Campbell River. They showed up at 11 a.m., sat down and learned the basics of fly tying, then took home the fly patterns they could use fishing. To begin with, I use bigger hooks and wet patterns then move over to streamer patterns that can be used in local
rivers and lakes. Ben from the local fly shop showed the people how to tie a coho pattern that can be fished in the fall. In addition to fly tying, a number of raffle draws were made with prizes donated by local merchants. The Chet Frost bamboo fly rod was won by Jill Wright. The four-hour fishing trip with Stories Charters was won by Joyce King. A two-night cabin stay at Roberts Lake resort was won by Lee Dermondy. The winner of Kayson golf package
was Paul Curtis. The next date for fly tying will announced as we get set for November sessions here in Campbell River. The fishing activity has picked up for both the ocean and local rivers. I met a few anglers here from Denmark and their interest was fly fishing local rivers. They were a bit early for the salmon run but they were after cutthroat trout and will fish the Elk River. At the moment there is plenty of room on the Campbell River but
soon the Chinook salmon will arrive, then the pinks The Tyee Club is having a buy and sell on Saturday, July 25 at the clubhouse parking lot, 2951 Spit Road from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be a selection of rods and reels and vintage tackle will be there. Vendors supply their own table, more information is available on their website. A number of reports are coming in from the west coast with good catch reports, some areas are hit and miss. Locally action
will heat up after July 15. For local charter operators, summer booking will book fast and it’s best to plan a trip and call the companies well in advance. A number of people are targeting lingcod and the tides are changing each day. We are in for warm weather and people are getting out enjoying what we have here around Campbell River.

Fly tying? Cool I guess, but why is it always at a library like people are just gonna learn knots and then go fish.
So they’re teaching fly tying and then doing raffles? Honestly that sounds like a sales pitch for the fly shop. Also “coho pattern” like is that for salmon or what, because I’m pretty sure everyone calls everything coho lol.
Not gonna lie I read “June 21” and thought it was like a big tournament announcement. Glad it’s not though. Also how do they get the bamboo rod from raffle to the winner without breaking it?? My uncle would’ve dropped it immediately.
Campbell River really has everything… fly tying, golf packages, charter trips. Then it says plenty of room now but chinook will arrive, then pinks. Isn’t that the same fish cycle like every year? I feel like the article kind of stops mid-sentence though, so idk what “call the” part is.
