Jump turns 11-scoreless innings into another A’s loss

Gage Jump delivered seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in his start Wednesday, extending his scoreless streak to 11 innings. But Las Vegas couldn’t turn that into a win, giving up six runs in the ninth inning of a 6-5 loss to Albuquerque at Las Vegas

On Wednesday, Gage Jump looked like he’d finally stopped fighting for control.

In his start, the Athletics’ No. 3 prospect delivered seven scoreless innings, striking out nine and extending a scoreless streak to 11 innings across his past two starts. The outing came with his typical turning points—strikeouts piling up, trouble briefly appearing, and then quickly being erased. The only problem for him was the scoreboard.

Las Vegas couldn’t get Jump the win. Albuquerque scored six runs in the ninth inning and held on for a 6-5 win at Las Vegas Ballpark.

Jump’s command was the foundation of the performance. He did not issue any free passes. and his ERA moved down to 4.50 in the process—2.75 of that improvement coming in May. He has also seen his walk rate increase quite a bit early in 2026. but Wednesday was the kind of start that pushes the story in the other direction.

The strikeouts didn’t come from one trick. The 60-grade fastball was the key. Jump earned five strikeouts on it. and the pitch held its velocity through the outing. topping out at 97 mph in the seventh. The picture becomes even sharper when you add the extra strikes the night delivered: three successful ABS challenge overturns for strikes. plus one strikeout on a batter’s pitch clock violation.

He had a scare early, but he wouldn’t let it grow. In the first inning, Jump escaped a first-and-third jam thanks to a one-out double play. After that, the inning damage never really returned. An Albuquerque runner reached scoring position just once more while Jump was on the mound—a double in the second inning.

For all the missed outcome, the form has been building. While his walk numbers have plummeted in recent outings, Jump is leading A’s prospects with 56 strikeouts across 38 innings. The momentum matters because he’s still young and still climbing through the system—at 23 years old. the lefty is working his way forward after a rougher start to his first stint in Triple-A.

The trajectory behind Wednesday’s start is clear. Jump is the 73rd overall pick in the 2024 Draft out of LSU. He soared to Double-A in his professional debut in 2025. and he’s picking up steam again in 2026—stretching what he’s shown on the mound into another scoreless run even as Las Vegas fell short in the end.

  1. Ninth inning gave it up like every time. But also it says no free passes?? Yet walks went up early 2026 so which is it? I’m confused lol.

  2. I swear strikeouts don’t matter if the team can’t hit. Like yeah 9 Ks or whatever, but the offense must’ve been asleep in the 9th. They always blame the pitcher though.

  3. If he topped at 97 in the 7th and had 5 strikeouts on the fastball then the bullpen should’ve been fine. 6 runs in the 9th sounds like someone messed up signs or something. Also the ABS challenge thing… so they just changed the strike count mid-game??
