Julia Roberts is stepping into her next big screen project—this time with a buzzy book already drawing attention before most readers have even seen the page.
Roberts will star in a new movie adaptation of Katy Hays’ upcoming novel Home Economics. The novel itself has not been released yet. but it’s been described as a “very buzzy” title that went through a competitive publishing auction before landing at Penguin Random House’s Viking imprint called Pamela Dornan Books.
The timeline is already clear: Home Economics is set to publish in 2027. The book has also been sold in 11 international territories, underscoring how widely publishers expect it to travel beyond its home market.
Roberts isn’t just attached as a star. In addition to starring, she will be producing alongside partners Lisa Roberts Gillan and Marisa Yeres Gill through their Red Om Films label. Marc Platt is producing as well, via Marc Platt Productions.
For now, the movie’s plot details are being kept under wraps, leaving the early focus where it belongs—on who’s involved, and how quickly this novel has turned into a major Hollywood bet.
Roberts’ next move lands after her recent work in the Amazon MGM Studios film After the Hunt. She’s also set to star in Warner Bros. thriller Panic Carefully, co-starring Elizabeth Olsen, Eddie Redmayne, Brian Tyree Henry, Joe Alwyn, Ben Chaplin, and Aidan Gillen.
This year, her performance in After the Hunt earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Golden Globes. She also made a rare appearance at the award show alongside her husband, Danny Moder.
Beyond the career news, there’s a personal milestone noted as well: in November 2025, Roberts celebrated the birthday of her 21-year-old twins, daughter Hazel and son Phinnaeus, sharing a sweet message on Instagram.
With Home Economics now in development and Roberts firmly at the center—both in front of the camera and behind it—the only question left is when the story will finally step out of the shadows and onto the screen.
