Judge blocks Trump name from Kennedy Center signage

Judge blocks – A federal judge ruled Friday that the Kennedy Center’s name—set by Congress for the late president John F. Kennedy—cannot be changed at the board’s direction. The decision also temporarily blocks a planned two-year closure for renovations beginning in early Ju

For weeks, the Kennedy Center’s comeback plans were wrapped in a new branding idea: put President Trump’s name alongside John F. Kennedy’s. On Friday, a federal judge shut that door and ordered the government-backed arts institution to start undoing it.

U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper blocked President Trump from adding his name to the Kennedy Center. ruling that the Washington. D.C. arts complex was named for the late president John F. Kennedy. In his decision. Cooper said the Kennedy Center’s “organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy. and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so.” He added. “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name. and only Congress can change it.”.

The judge’s order went beyond symbolism. As part of the ruling, Cooper required that all signage and online materials referring to “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” “Trump Kennedy Center,” or anything similar be removed within 14 days.

The administration’s response was immediate. A Kennedy Center spokesperson told MISRYOUM via email Friday afternoon that the organization would appeal. The spokesperson. Roma Daravi. vice president of public relations for the complex. wrote: “We will review the decision carefully though the reality remains — the Center requires an urgent and significant restoration – a truth that even the plaintiff acknowledges. With $257 million secured by President Trump and approved by Congress. the resources are in place and we remain committed to pursuing every lawful avenue to ensure the Trump Kennedy Center is restored as a national cultural landmark for all Americans to enjoy.”.

The White House was asked for comment and did not provide an immediate reply.

Cooper also temporarily blocked the administration from closing the Kennedy Center for a planned two-year renovation that was slated to begin in July.

Trump and the center’s current voting board members—selected by the president. who also became chairman of the center last year—had planned to start renovations in early July. just after the 250th anniversary celebrations. But in his 94-page ruling. Cooper called the renovation plans “murky.” He wrote that “None of the board members had sufficient information in advance of the March 16 meeting to make a well-considered decision to close the center.”.

The center has been winding down its programming and has already dismissed most of its programming staff.

The judge anchored his skepticism in the record before the board. He pointed to President Trump’s February post on Truth Social. writing that “There was no ‘one year review of the Trump Kennedy Center. that has taken place with Contractors. Musical Experts. Art Institutions. and other Advisors and Consultants. deciding between’ complete and partial closure. as President Trump claimed.”.

Cooper’s ruling traces back to a lawsuit filed in March by Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center board whose voting rights were stripped last year.

Cooper’s order does not permanently end the possibility of a closure. He said it should happen only after the board has “sufficient information to make a considered. independent decision. taking account of its obligation to both maintain and operate a premiere arts venue and its solemn duty to memorialize a fallen President.”.

For the Kennedy Center. the ruling creates an immediate scramble: within two weeks. the organization must remove Trump-referencing branding from its public face. At the same time. the judge has put a pause on the plan to close the center for two years—leaving staff. patrons. and the board in a tense holding pattern. with the stakes now defined less by restoration promises than by who gets to decide how the institution is governed.

  1. I saw a headline that said the Kennedy Center is blocked?? Like blocked from doing renovations or blocked from reopening or both. Either way, Congress naming stuff is like the whole point right?

  2. This sounds like petty political branding. But also the judge says Congress named it so it can’t change… okay but didn’t they literally close it anyway? Not sure why it’s tied to the Trump name unless they planned the signage during the closure.

  3. The judge is acting like a sign is the same as the entire renovation plan. Meanwhile they’re talking about $257 million like that solves everything. Removing all the online stuff in 14 days sounds like a lot, but if Trump paid for it then why is Congress suddenly in the way? This is just gonna get appealed and dragged out anyway. I’m confused who even runs that place if a judge can basically tell them what to print.
