Josh Dobbs on leaving New England: “That was very frustrating, the way they handled that”

New Lions backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs says he’s happy to be in Detroit — but not happy with his former team, the Patriots.

The Patriots were ready to move on from Dobbs this offseason, but they were holding out hope that they could get something for him in a trade. When they didn’t, they cut him — two weeks after the start of free agency, when some of the teams that might have been interested in signing him had already signed other backup quarterbacks.

Asked today in Detroit what the offseason has been like for him, Dobbs said it was different than other offseasons because the Patriots didn’t give him the opportunity to be with another team from Day One.

“It was a weird offseason because it was my first time not having OTAs and everything, and that was just by the nature of my situation in New England, with the timing. That was very frustrating, the way they handled that,” Dobbs said.

Dobbs emphasized that he’s been working all offseason to be ready when he finally found the right team. The well-traveled Dobbs is experienced at joining new teams: He started his career with the Steelers and then went to the Jaguars, then the Steelers again, then the Browns, then the Lions, then the Titans, then the Browns again, then the Cardinals, then the Vikings, then the 49ers and then the Patriots. He knows what it is to get cut, but he doesn’t like how the Patriots did it.
