NEW YORK — The Yankees had a lead to defend, a ballpark buzzing with the kind of tension that comes when stars are watching from the lineup. But by the fifth inning, José Ramírez had taken the moment and turned it into Cleveland’s advantage.

Ramírez doubled in three straight at-bats and drove in the go-ahead run against Cam Schlittler in the fifth inning. From there, the Guardians kept building, scoring their most runs since May 17 and finishing with a 9-4 victory over New York on Tuesday night.

Kyle Manzardo set the tone earlier with a two-run homer off Schlittler, who left after giving up 7-3. Then in the eighth, rookie Travis Bazzana struck again, hitting a three-run double off Camilo Doval to widen the gap. Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio also each added a sacrifice fly, and the Guardians finished with 12 hits.

For the Yankees, Paul Goldschmidt made sure New York’s offense didn’t disappear. He homered and knocked in all four runs. But the win came with a familiar sting for the Bronx club: New York played without Aaron Judge. who was out with a bone bruise in his upper right rib that is causing pain in his right shoulder.

Judge missed his first game this season after undergoing testing Monday that revealed the bruise and consulting with a team doctor on Tuesday.

Cleveland started to pull ahead after New York briefly regained control. Goldschmidt’s two-run single put the Yankees in front 4-3 in the bottom half of the fifth. but the Guardians responded by loading the bases after Patrick Bailey reached on an error by third baseman Amed Rosario and Rocchio was hit in the hand by a pitch. Bazzana tied it with a sacrifice fly. and Ramírez delivered the decisive swing—lacing a 2-2 curveball over leaping first baseman Ben Rice and down the right-field line for a 5-4 lead.

Ramírez added to the damage later, doubling again in the seventh to score Rocchio. It was the fifth time in his career that Ramírez doubled three times and the first since Aug. 26, 2024. He entered the game in an 8-for-45 skid. but his timing turned that slump into a story that ended with Cleveland running away.

The pitching sequence shaped the rest of the night. Schlittler allowed five runs—four earned—and five hits in a season-low 4 1/3 innings. On the Cleveland side, starter Joey Cantillo permitted four runs and six hits in four innings, and five relievers followed. Colin Holderman, who improved to 4-1, stranded a runner in the fifth for the win.

Goldschmidt had already struck early with a two-run homer in the third to put New York ahead 2-1.

Now attention turns to Wednesday night, when Cleveland RHP Gavin Williams (8-3, 3.07 ERA) opposes New York RHP Gerrit Cole (1-0, 0.00).
