Jordan Staal calls Canadiens Game 1 ready, Canes unready

The Carolina Hurricanes have finally lost a playoff game this postseason. Carolina fell to Juraj Slafkovsky and the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals. After the game, captain Jordan Staal made a rather stunning admission about how this loss came to be. “We lost the game from the start, obviously giving them that many freebies… There wasn’t enough respect for them. They played a great game. They were ready to roll, and we weren’t,” the Hurricanes captain said on Thursday
night, via team reporter Walt Ruff. Carolina actually seemed to set the tone early on. Seth Jarvis scored 33 seconds into the game to make it 1-0 Hurricanes. However, Cole Caufield responded with a goal less than 30 seconds after Montreal initially fell behind. Things would snowball from there for the hosting Canes. Including the Caufield goal, the Canadiens scored four times in a span of 11 minutes and 32 seconds. This gave the Habs a massive 4-1 lead entering the intermission. And it sapped
all of the momentum Carolina had built up with their early wave of pressure. Of course, rust was to be expected on Carolina’s behalf. They have played just nine games since April 17th. Additionally, this was Carolina’s first game in 11 days. They haven’t played since May 9th, when they completed a sweep over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Hurricanes are looking to make their first Stanley Cup Final since 2006. However, they are 1-17 in their last 18 games played in an East Final. They
need to find a way to reverse that trend now before it is too late.
