Jonathan Kuminga’s Timberwolves contract decision has Warriors fans rolling their eyes
Warriors fans were a little bit shocked when reading about Jonathan Kuminga’s decision to sign with the Timberwolves via free agency.
One of the last remaining dominoes in NBA free agency fell this week when Jonathan Kuminga agreed to sign with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Kuminga’s former team, the Golden State Warriors, were not in the running for the free agent forward, but when his reason for signing with the Timberwolves became public via his agent, Warriors fans had quite the reaction to the news.
Jonathan Kuminga’s main reason for choosing the Timberwolves via free agency was because he wanted to be a part of a versatile defensive team while not caring about his offensive numbers, as per Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
“He made this decision because of the defensive versatility of this team,” Kuminga’s agent Aaron Turner said via Krawczynski. “Offense is secondary to what he’s thinking about. It’s going to be whatever we gotta do to win that night. Nobody is going to care about stats or shots.”
Predictably, Warriors fans flocked in droves to social media to convey their disbelief. Many of them were of the mind that Kuminga could’ve have been a $100 million-plus contract player with the team had he bought in to those same principles that Warriors coach Steve Kerr had preached.
He would have gotten 200m from the Warriors if he showed that. Disappointing for everyone involved.

Obviously the onus is on Kuminga to prove that he really is about what he and his agent are saying, and buying into that will go a long way towards the Timberwolves potentially being a contending team in the Western Conference next season.
The former lottery pick is coming off a season in which he was traded from the Warriors to the Atlanta Hawks at the deadline. He appeared in a total of 36 games between both teams, including 14 starts, while averaging 12.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line and 72.4 percent from the free-throw line.
