JoJo Siwa Denies Lavender Relationship Rumors With Chris Hughes

JoJo Siwa pushed back on speculation that she’s in a “lavender” relationship with Chris Hughes, explaining how she came out at 17, why the term “lavender relationship” confused her, and what her long-distance romance with the Big Brother UK partner means to he

JoJo Siwa is drawing a hard line against speculation that her relationship with Chris Hughes is a “lavender” arrangement—described online as an outwardly heterosexual setup involving one or more queer partners.

The 23-year-old “Boomerang” singer addressed the rumors on E!’s Hot Goss, speaking directly about how she came out and why she took issue with the assumptions surrounding her love life.

“I came out when I was 17, I had a wonderful relationship with a girl,” Siwa said. She added that dating a man after coming out drew more scrutiny than dating a woman had. “Coming out dating a man for me ended up getting more scrutiny than coming out dating a girl,” she said.

Siwa described the shift in public reaction after she began dating Hughes, also known as the man she met through Big Brother UK. “A lot of people took it in a negative way for the fun of it. People thought Chris and I’s relationship was not real,” she said.

When asked about the term “lavender relationship,” she said she had to look it up. “I had no clue what it meant before,” Siwa explained. “I Googled it and I was like, ‘Oh, grow up!’”

Her pushback didn’t stop at the label. “I hate that people think that love is controllable,” she said, then clarified her feelings in her own words. “Prior to Chris, I was never interested in men—still not interested in men as a whole. I’m interested in a man—singular, not plural.”

She also addressed her connection to women and men. saying her friendships and daily life have long leaned a particular way. “I’ve had dudes as my friends my whole life. I bond better,” Siwa said. “I don’t want to get my nails done and talk iced coffee orders with girls. I don’t carry a purse, I carry a backpack. I don’t wear women’s pants. I wear men’s pants…I’ll be very honest. I saw him and I was like. ‘Yeah. we’re going to be best friends.’”.

Siwa said her relationship with Hughes is built on something steady and personal. “Chris is such a wonderful partner. We have the utmost trust for each other. We have the utmost respect for each other,” she added.

The romance has also played out at a distance. The couple marked their first anniversary together in May with sweet tributes shared on their respective Instagram accounts. offering fans a glimpse into their long-distance relationship. The anniversary celebration followed Siwa’s admission that she’d had “a bit of wedding fever.”.

  1. So she’s not “lavender” but also said she still isn’t interested in men plural?? I’m confused. Like if it’s singular then what are we supposed to call it.

  2. I swear the internet hears one sentence and runs with it. But also the whole “people didn’t think it was real” thing… yeah because relationships between people get judged nonstop now.

  3. This is why I don’t look up terms like that. She Googled it and was like “grow up” which is fair, but didn’t she basically just confirm she’s into dudes, just like one dude? Also long distance with Chris Hughes from Big Brother… sounds like PR to me, not gonna lie.
