Joi AI floods with 120,000 bids for $2,000 role

Joi AI says more than 120,000 people have applied to a “masturbation consultant” role paying $2,000 a month to test its Daily Guided Masturbation feature—far beyond initial expectations—after a viral post on X. The deadline has been extended by another week an
By the time Julie Levin refreshed the application page again, the numbers had stopped feeling like normal job interest.
Joi AI. an AI companionship company. had posted a callout for “masturbation consultants” to test its new Daily Guided Masturbation feature. Levin, the company’s head of brand, expected a few hundred applications. The role, she said, would pay $2,000 per month, and the consultant would document effects on stress, sleep and mood.
Two weeks later, more than 120,000 applications had rolled in, and the pace kept climbing. Levin said the original link to the application broke under the volume. The company moved people to a Google Form, and the application deadline has been extended by another week.
Levin said Joi AI is hoping to recruit 10 people of different genders. age groups and sexual orientations. including the oldest person who applies—though the team has yet to sift through the avalanche. At present, Levin said most applicants are men in their 20s, but thousands of women have applied as well.
What started as a joke turned into a tidal wave of attention. “I think it started as a joke,” Levin said. “So it went viral when people came to our Twitter account and started tagging their bros saying, ‘employment is calling your name.’”
Joi AI’s original announcement on X now sits at more than 23.8 million impressions. The reaction split immediately: many people appeared stunned by the role, while others were eager to apply. One person commented on X, “This is literally my area of specialty. Where do I apply?” Another joked, “Parents are going to be so excited I finally got a job!”.
The company has also been surprised by who is showing up among the rushed applications. Levin said she’s reviewing submissions from credentialed individuals, including stand-up comedians, sommeliers who “know how to describe things,” and sex workers with years of phone sex experience.
For Joi AI, the job opening is landing inside a market that is already drawing serious money. AI companionship has become a booming business. Last year, the AI companion market was estimated at $36.79 billion and was expected to reach $317.96 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research.
Levin said Joi AI has one million visits and interactions each month. She pointed to growth since the company rebranded last April and improved the quality of chats and image generation capabilities. Users. she said. can create their own unique characters or interact with more than 300 licensed AI twins of real adult entertainment celebrities.
Joi AI has 70 employees around the world. Levin did not share information on the company’s valuation or investors. She did mention that the company’s affiliate marketing platform has received interest from potential partners since the “consultant” role opened up. and she said X has become the platform’s top revenue driver over the past few days.
Internally. Levin said her colleagues have started calling the opening “the hottest vacancy in AI right now. ” and the wave has spread to personal networks. Some of Levin’s personal friends have asked to be recruited. One of her colleagues’ teen sons asked if there was an age limit to apply. and Levin insisted the process would not be handled with favoritism.
Applicants must be 18 to be considered, for the record. Levin said there will be “no favoritism” and that the company wants to keep the process public and “as fair for everyone as possible.”
The company is still deciding how to capitalize on the attention without cutting corners. Levin said Joi AI plans to include a social media challenge to court serious applicants. but logistics are “up in the air” because the team wasn’t prepared for the viral level of interest. She said the company wants to leverage some of the new attention to promote the product. while also being meticulous about how it chooses finalists.
“A lot of people actually can see it as a real opportunity for them,” Levin said. “There are a lot of people with very different hard skills and expertise in different areas.”

120k for a $2k/month job… the internet really has no brakes.
So basically an AI app is paying people to… test masturbation? I mean good for them I guess? But like, is this legit or just bots spamming forms? Also the link breaking sounds like they didn’t expect anything.
Why are they calling it a “masturbation consultant” like it’s a real consulting gig lol. I saw this on X and thought it was a scam, like they were gonna steal info. But apparently it’s “Daily Guided Masturbation” feature testing? idk man, $2k is $2k.
I’m confused… if they wanted to recruit 10 people, how do 120,000 even help? And they said it pays $2,000 a month to document stress/sleep/mood, right? Doesn’t that just turn into a bunch of teenagers messing around and lying on the form? Also why is it “oldest person who applies”?? Seems kinda weird either way.
