Johnson insists Bears’ stadium talks are moving Chicago’s way

Johnson insists – Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said there is “no plan” in Hammond, Indiana, and no concrete work elsewhere, while also claiming Chicago and the Bears are quietly moving toward an agreement for a new domed stadium.

Chicago’s new stadium argument didn’t just stay alive this week — Chicago’s mayor made it sound like it never really left.

Speaking Tuesday. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said the Bears’ narrowed stadium focus on Arlington Heights and Hammond. Indiana. still doesn’t change where the city believes the process is headed. “There’s no plan in Hammond,” Johnson said, adding, “There’s none of that in the suburbs. We are already further along than any other site that might even be considered.”.

Johnson went further than geography. He described an internal rhythm of talks that. in his telling. is already advancing toward terms even as the public search continues. “Not only did we have a publicly owned stadium that expanded green space. we were moving forward with conversations around the terms of an agreement. ” Johnson said. “That’s been ongoing. and the hope is that Springfield. after what they’ve done in this last session. that Springfield engages with the Bears. with the city and all stakeholders collectively. to come up with a . . . plan that shows the viability of what we’ve already put forward.”.

Central to Johnson’s stance is a belief that Chicago itself remains not just an option, but the logical end point. “There’s no comparison,” Johnson said. “There’s no traffic study in Arlington Heights. There’s no environmental study in Hammond. There are no terms of agreement.”

A dome would, by Johnson’s account, remove some of the pressure points that come with weather and outdoor scheduling. He also described the Bears as coveting a domed stadium. Even with the roof still the practical assumption rather than the final definition. the question driving this season of stadium talk remains the same: where. exactly. does the Bears’ future end up?.

Johnson’s message landed with a blunt insistence — that Chicago is ahead. that other locations aren’t showing comparable groundwork. and that the Bears’ next step should be taken with the city and stakeholders collectively. For fans. the tone of the dispute is familiar. but the mayor’s confidence is unmistakable: he believes the deal-making is already underway. and he wants Springfield to bring that process to the point where a viable plan can be presented.

  1. Bro “no plan in Hammond”?? But they keep talking about it like it’s next door. Sounds like political word games to me. Either way the Bears are gonna get what they want.

  2. I don’t even know who Springfield is supposed to be here… like Springfield IL? or Indiana? They’re saying there’s no traffic study in Arlington Heights but aren’t they always doing studies? Seems convenient.

  3. Johnson always talks like Chicago is “further along” but I’ve heard that same stuff for years. If there’s no environmental study in Hammond then why did everybody on my feed act like it was already happening? Also a domed stadium doesn’t fix traffic, it just hides the weather lol. Springfield better not just rubber stamp whatever backroom deal they think is happening.
