John Stamos Says Divorce From Rebecca Romijn Broke Heart

John Stamos looked back on his 2005 divorce from Rebecca Romijn and admitted he “didn’t want to get divorced,” saying it “broke my heart” and took him “a long time to get over it.” He later moved on, while Romijn married Jerry O’Connell and the two couples’ pa
John Stamos didn’t just remember his divorce from Rebecca Romijn—he still carries it in his chest.
Speaking on an episode of The Really Good Podcast with Bobbi Althoff, the Full House alum addressed the end of his marriage with Romijn, saying, “I had one. It broke my heart.”
Stamos traced the sting to a simple fact: he didn’t want the marriage to end. “Because I didn’t want to get divorced. She wanted to,” he said. “It took me a long time to get over it.”
Romijn and Stamos met at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 1994, with Stamos attending as a guest with his Full House on-screen wife Lori Loughlin. Romijn was on the runway as a model. The two dated for four years before marrying in 1998, and their divorce was finalized in 2005.
By the time Stamos talked about it on the podcast, his life had taken a different path. He married actress Caitlin McHugh in 2018, and they welcomed a son that same year.
Romijn also built a new life with Jerry O’Connell, tying the knot with him. Stamos’ comments about Romijn during a promotional period for his memoir. If You Would Have Told Me. sparked a years-long feud with the couple. Romijn was “shocked” by the remarks. and O’Connell said he had no “interest” in reading the book—especially after learning Stamos accused Romijn of cheating during their relationship.
The friction, though, didn’t last forever. Stamos said he buried the hatchet with O’Connell last year, describing a recent run-in: “She has a nice life. She married another guy. She has kids. They’re doing great. I met him recently. It was very interesting. He was very sweet. He was very nice… We were at a party together, and he came over, and he was super nice. He couldn’t have been sweeter. He was very, very funny and very charming.”.
For his part, Stamos says he hasn’t seen Romijn since their divorce—something he frames as a long stretch. And the reason seems rooted in how he once spoke about her: he referred to her as “the devil” and said he “hated” her.
That’s what makes his current reflection feel so stark. In 2005, he said the divorce “broke my heart” and took him “a long time” to shake. Years later, he can name the warmth he found in Jerry O’Connell—but when it comes to Romijn, he describes distance that’s lasted since the split.
