When the question finally started to narrow, John Meredith III didn’t have to look far for the answer.
A home-state five-star cornerback from North Crowley in Fort Worth. Texas. Meredith knows what it means to play college football in the state where his football story began. On Friday. June 19. he made it official: the Longhorns won the final battle for his commitment. beating out Ohio State and Texas A&M.
The decision lands on a week where eligibility has already been its own kind of fight. Meredith was ruled ineligible for his senior season in a 5-2 vote at an 11-6 district executive committee meeting after he transferred to North Crowley from Euless Trinity in January.
Even with that uncertainty in the background, the recruiting choice was clear. Meredith is listed at 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds, and 247Sports ranks him as the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2027 class and the top defensive back in the cycle. The updated USA TODAY Sports composite football rankings put him at No. 2 in the country in the 2027 class.
This year, he also took part in the 2026 Under Armour All-American Game, recording a tackle and an interception—production that only adds weight to what Texas just secured.
That commitment matters in more ways than one inside Texas’ recruiting room. It comes with the Longhorns already working to keep another high-profile target—five-star wide receiver Easton Royal. Whether or not Royal stays committed to Texas has been a central question for weeks as he recently took official visits to Florida and LSU. Royal has been committed to Texas since last November, and Texas has been battling to hold onto that pledge. With Meredith now in the fold, Texas has something to point to as it tries to keep that momentum.
Before Meredith’s commitment, Texas’ 2027 class was ranked by 247Sports as No. 12, with 15 commitments. Of those 15 pledges, five rank as top 100 players for the cycle.
