Manorhamilton to Skreen-Dromard: Week of local events

Manorhamilton Traditional Music Festival The John McKenna Traditional Society music festival, which takes place in Drumkeerin from Sunday, May 31, till Sunday, June 7, will have some excellent traditional musical entertainment events – including a céilí Mór, a concert, a youth whistle and flute workshop, as well as whistle and flute competitions – going on over the festival’s duration in the local Community Centre. The John McKenna Traditional musical festival will kicks off on Sunday, May 31, when a céilí Mór featuring the Innisfree céilí

band takes place in Drumkeerin Community Centre at 3 p.m. The admission fee to the céilí Mór will be €10. The traditional musical festival will continue on Friday night, June 5, with what promises to be a great concert featuring the famous Collis and Kearins families in Drumkeerin Community Centre at 8 p.m. The admission fee to the Collis and Kearins families concert will be €10. On Saturday, June 6, the John McKenna Traditional musical festival will stage a youth whistle and flute workshop with

Breda Shannon in Drumkeerin Community Centre from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The youth whistle and flute workshop participation fee will be €5 per person. The John McKenna Traditional musical festival will close on Sunday, June 7, with great whistle and flute competitions that will take place in Drumkeerin Community Centre at 3 p.m. All participating in the whistle and flute competitions are reminded that registration for them will start from 2.30 p.m. in Drumkeerin Community Centre. Tents, Tarmon born John McKenna (1880-1947) was one

of the most influential flute players in Irish music. In 1909 McKenna emigrated to New York, where he had an outstanding recording career from 1921 to 1937. His recordings heavily influenced De Dannan, Frankie Gavin and Matt Molloy, as well as many other great flute players. John McKenna is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Hawthone, New York. A commemorative monument was erected to John McKenna near St Patrick’s Church, Tarmon in 1980. The John McKenna Music Festival began shortly after the erection of his monument and

it has taken place annually in Drumkeerin since that time.
