Jing Yan keeps narrow lead at Meijer LPGA Classic

Jing Yan shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday at the wind-swept Meijer LPGA Classic in Belmont, Michigan, holding a one-shot lead ahead of next week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine.

BELMONT, Mich. — The wind didn’t let up at Blythefield Country Club, but Jing Yan did. On Saturday, she carded a 4-under 68 to keep a one-shot lead in the Meijer LPGA Classic, the final LPGA event before next week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine.

Yan made it feel like the tournament was still in motion with a birdie on the par-5 18th to close out her day. It capped her second straight bogey-free round, and it left her at 14-under 202 for the tournament.

“I just tried to enjoy it,” Yan said. “I knew I was going to be a little bit nervous not having really been in this position before, but I have been kind of in the later tee times and there have been times where I haven’t handled it very well. So, just trying to figure out what really works for me.”

For Yan, those words landed with extra weight. She is winless on the LPGA Tour, and the lead is the kind of position that can turn a round into a test of nerves. She described exactly what she was fighting: the uncertainty of being there with the pressure already sitting on her shoulders.

Lottie Woad of England is right there in the chase. She followed her own late surge by birdieing the 18th for a 68 and moving into second place.

Cassie Porter of Australia sits two shots behind after shooting 69. Porter pointed to how the course shifted as the day moved on.

“The back nine the greens started to firm up,” Porter said.

In Gee Chun produced the kind of round that shakes up a leaderboard, firing a 65 to reach 10 under. Wei-Ling Hsu shot 68 and also sits at 10 under, along with Yan Liu, who opened with a 70.

The lead isn’t just about distance or scorecard math right now. It’s about how players respond when the wind makes every swing feel slightly off-balance. and when the next big week—Hazeltine and the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship—already hangs over the final rounds. Yan will start Sunday with the pressure of holding steady. Woad. Porter. and the players just one cluster behind will be ready to attack early and test whether that steadiness survives the harder conditions.

  1. So she’s 1 shot up but also winless… sounds like she’s about to choke, sorry. Also Meijer Classic? Didn’t know Meijer sponsored golf like that.

  2. Hazeltine next week already? I guess that means this tournament is just practice for the real thing. I read “bogey-free” and got excited but then she’s still only up one so who knows.

  3. I swear the leaderboard stuff always makes it sound close but in reality it’s never close. Like 14-under 202?? That just feels made up. Also the wind “didn’t let up” but she still hit birdies on 18, so did the wind magically stop for her or what. I’m confused.
