Jim James readies Wowed Out after eight-year wait

Jim James has announced his first solo album in eight years, Wowed Out, arriving August 28 via ATO. Alongside the news, he released the lead single “Come Again” and shared how the record was shaped by years of personal work with longtime friend Brian Reitzell.

Jim James doesn’t frame his return like a comeback so much as a decision to keep chasing something he can still feel. The first solo album in eight years is called Wowed Out, set for release on August 28 via ATO, and the lead single is “Come Again.”

In a statement. James said the song came from being “discouraged by how much things are changing in directions I don’t agree with. but trying to remember that there’s still so much beauty to be experienced.” He didn’t stop there. “You’ve got to just keep going and keep trying again and again and again to find joy,” he added.

The album’s mood is just as personal. James described it as something like a memory he’s trying to recover: “When I think about making this album. it almost feels like I was in some kind of dream and now I’m trying to remember what the dream was about.” He said the process brought him “a lot of joy and comfort. ” and that he hopes it brings “everyone else a little joy and comfort too.”.

Wowed Out was produced entirely by James, and the recordings began taking shape in the fall of 2025. The spark was a stash of music he’d been creating with Brian Reitzell. a longtime friend and a composer known for his extensive work with Sofia Coppola. James said he’d been returning to those recordings for years “and couldn’t figure out what to do with it. ” until “last year everything started flowing in a really beautiful way.”.

The tracklist gives the album its shape, from the opening “Baby Dear” to “Your Door” at the end. Wowed Out includes: “Baby Dear,” “Hands On,” “Come Again,” “Lost Child,” “Home (Green),” “We Love Our Life,” “Wowed Out,” “Whole Heart (Into It),” “Rewind It,” and “Your Door.”

  1. So is “Come Again” like a comeback single or just new stuff. I’m confused but I’m glad he’s making music again. ATO though… that’s kinda niche?

  2. Wait, didn’t Brian Reitzell do stuff for Sofia Coppola? That’s what it says, so I’m like… is this gonna sound like movie score vibes? Also he says “remembering the dream” like ok deep, but I just wanna know if it’s gonna be more My Morning Jacket style or totally different.

  3. “Discouraged by how much things are changing” — so basically politics sadness then? I mean I guess. Also produced entirely by Jim James, but recordings taking shape in fall 2025, so he’s been working forever. The track names look kinda dreamy tho like “Lost Child” and “Your Door” sounds like it could be a breakup song. Not sure why he didn’t just drop it sooner when the single already came out.
