Jessica Simpson opens up on early weight pressure

Performing in Pennsylvania on June 11, Jessica Simpson recalled the harsh pressure she felt to lose weight early in her music career—down to being told to “lose 15 pounds” as a teenager and to aim for a six-pack for her second record.

Jessica Simpson stood in front of a crowd in Pennsylvania on Thursday, June 11, and let her guard down in a way that sounded almost like a release.

“It feels good to be back on stage in my 40s. I missed all of my 30s, so this really to me, feels like I’m me again. I feel like walking onstage is almost more comfortable than my living room at home, and it’s such a beautiful feeling,” she said, in footage obtained by Us Weekly.

But the nostalgia quickly turned into something heavier as she reflected on how early stardom demanded more than just a voice.

When she was first starting out as a singer and chasing pop success, she said she was constantly compared to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. In her telling, the comparisons didn’t just set expectations—they came with demands.

“I had to follow in their footsteps. I really thought I was signed just because of my voice, then it was like, ‘OK, you need to lose 15 pounds,” Jessica shared. She added that she was “just 115 pounds as a teenager.”

“To tell a 17-year-old that is a lot,” she continued. She said she was then told her second record “needed to have a six-pack,” adding, “which was definitely not going to happen.”

“I’m just not built that way, you know? There were just all these things that I had to be to be ‘Jessica Simpson’ or the version of Jessica Simpson they believed I should be to be successful. I always felt like a failure, like, I was never good enough,” she said.

The weight of those memories is part of why her return to the stage in her 40s feels so personal to her now.

Simpson has spoken before about coming through that era by changing how she relates to herself. Back in October 2025. during a visit to The Jennifer Hudson Show. she discussed her music comeback and said she went through an “incredible journey of trying to discover self love and also compassion. and just trying to remain vulnerable. but find strength through it. ” as she prepared her first new collection of music since 2008.

That project is titled Nashville Canyon: Part 1.

Earlier this month, at a different concert, Simpson also got “very vulnerable” about her past drinking problem—continuing a pattern of telling the truth in public, even when it’s hard.
