Jesse Marsch’s roster gamble paid off in Canada’s draw

“I came up when Canada needed me,” Larin said. “It was special for the fans and took the weight off our shoulder getting a point.” It was a day of mixing and matching for Marsch, who took Jonathan David out in the second half after his dramatic miss earlier in the game. It was always part of his plan to go to Larin if needed. “Kyle is one of our oldest guys and he’s been with this program for so long,” teammate Ismail Kone said
of the clutch contribution. “He’s given everything and never cheated. “He’s all about the team. He’s all about the sacrifice. He’s one of our leaders, one of our captains and there’s a reason for that.” How big was the goal on an historic level? Beyond getting that crucial point to start off the tournament, it was just the second time a Canadian man has scored at a World Cup. (There was a third goal, but that was the result of an own goal.) The Canadians
will need more offence if they’re going to do any lingering damage in this their third World Cup experience. But Larin’s big one — and the reaction of the fans — may eventually be viewed as a great place to start. “The message was to go out and try to score,” Larin said when asked what Marsch offered as he entered. “That was all that was on our mind. I’ve shown I can score and I did it again and I’ll keep doing it.”
Jesse Marsch, Kyle Larin, Jonathan David, Canada World Cup draw, Ismail Kone, World Cup goal, Canadian men's World Cup scoring record
So Larin scored and Canada got a draw?? Sounds like he carried them.
I don’t even follow soccer that much but Marsch switching guys felt like one of those “bench him, he’ll cook” moves. Also the fact Canada hasn’t had many goals like that… wild. Fans were probably going nuts.
Wait I’m confused, did the “second time” mean second match or second player ever? Cuz it says there was a third goal but own goal so like… does that count for the record or nah? And why take Jonathan David out after a miss—seems harsh.
Marsch’s roster gamble paid off in Canada like that’s genius or whatever but also I swear teams always “plan” to sub people in after messing up. They say it was part of the plan with Larin, ok sure. Still though, Canada needs more offence in their third World Cup like the article said… so don’t get too comfy off one point, right?
