  • Jen credits Ina Garten’s approachable cooking style with making her feel comfortable in the kitchen.

Jennifer Garner may be best known for her mile-long acting resume, but her latest role—as beloved food blogger Hollis Shaw in Peacock’s The Five-Star Weekend—might be her most on-brand project yet.

If Garner isn’t on set, she’s probably in the kitchen—developing new recipes, filming her Pretend Cooking Show (where the food is very real, by the way!), or whipping up a dinner for her kids. “Nothing makes me happier than when my kids request that I make something,” she tells Delish.

And the one dish her daughter asks for on repeat just so happens to be her friend Ina Garten’s chicken pot pie with puff pastry.

“I can’t recommend it higher,” Garner says about the recipe. “My daughter [Violet] was home from college, and a friend of hers was with her, and they walked through the door, and I said, ‘Oh, great, here!’…Violet told me that her friend is [always] like, ‘Remember when your mom made those chicken pies?’”

“I have a request to make that again as soon as everyone’s back from all their adventures,” she continues. “And I’m so excited to do that because I know it makes them happy.”

There’s a reason that Jen is so connected to Ina’s cooking—beyond the obvious (that “it tastes better”). She admits that The Barefoot Contessa’s approach to the kitchen has made her much more comfortable with the process.

“I think all of the cooking on screen that Ina pioneered—you know, along with Julia Child and others—it’s less intimidating,” she says. “I’m not a professional chef. I’m a home chef. When I’m cooking for people, I’m stressed…It’s hard. Cooking is hard! [But Ina] leaves in the normal people things, like ‘wash your hands.’”

And for Ina, that’s the type of impact she’s after. “That’s all the purpose anybody needs in life,” she chimes in. “You’re giving them the tools to do something themselves, and that just makes me feel great.”

“And it changes their families forever,” Jen says.
