Jaylen Brown fires back at Trae Young’s East claim

Trae Young said he feels “the most slept-on” he’s ever been and joked the Wizards could be the No. 1 team in the East next year. Jaylen Brown’s reply was blunt: critics will just “move the bar,” a reaction tied to his own experience of constant scrutiny—especi

Jaylen Brown doesn’t pretend criticism doesn’t land.

So when Trae Young went viral with a line about being “the most slept-on” he’s ever been, Brown didn’t just shrug it off—he answered with the kind of cynicism that fits someone who’s spent years in the spotlight and under a microscope.

Young’s point was simple, and his phrasing made it travel. “This is the most slept-on I’ve been in my whole life,” Trae Young said. “I know there’s a lot of recency bias when it comes to media. Imagine the Wizards are the No. 1 team in the East next year. What are people going to be saying?”

Then came the part that set up Brown’s response. Young added, “I haven’t played very much in a year and a half because of some injuries, the trade, things like that,” before insisting, “But trust me, I’m just entering my prime.”

The quote spread fast, especially the Wizards-as-first-seed scenario. And Brown—coming off a season filled with both praise and hard moments—responded as if he’d heard the setup before.

“Their gone move the bar,” Brown posted on June 10, 2026.

Brown’s reaction lands with weight because Boston’s recent path has been anything but linear. The Celtics star is no stranger to criticism; he’s been one of the most talked-about players in the league for quite a long time now. and he’s also extremely outspoken. Brown has defended some of his peers on occasion too—drawing on the experience of being a former president of the NBA Players’ Association.

This season, his own story turned into an argument against easy narratives. With Jayson Tatum out for most of the year after tearing his Achilles. many expected the Celtics to be among the worst teams in the league. Instead, Brown delivered a performance that pushed his name into the MVP conversation. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, and he led Boston to the second seed in the Eastern Conference.

It was a turnaround that didn’t just surprise people—it contradicted the expectations that had been written for them at the start of the year.

But when Tatum returned in the playoffs, Boston was expected to be a top contender. The Celtics took a 3-1 series lead over the Philadelphia 76ers, and for a moment it looked like the team’s regular-season story would end the way it was supposed to. It didn’t.

Boston squandered that immense lead and joined the list of teams who lost a 3-1 series lead. For Brown, the lesson wasn’t about talent or effort. It was about how quickly narratives move—and how easily they shift from “prove it” to “what went wrong.”

And that’s where Brown’s reply to Young feels personal. Young framed the media conversation as something rooted in recency bias. asking what people would say if Washington became the No. 1 team in the East next year. Brown’s answer—“They gone move the bar”—suggests he expects the standard to change no matter what happens next.

  1. Why are they even bringing up Wizards being #1 like that’s realistic 😂 Also Trae said slept on but he’s always on TV.

  2. I think Brown’s mad because he never gets “credit” when people do good, which is kinda funny coming from the guy who’s always headline news. But injuries and trade stuff matter too, so idk why everyone acting like recency bias is a crime.

  3. Wait so is this about the NBA Players Association thing?? I’m confused, I read the Wizards part and thought they traded somebody again. Trae being “entering prime” sounds like PR, and Brown saying people move the bar is probably true but it also makes him sound bitter. Like can we talk basketball instead of all this screenshot attitude
