Varley convicted of baby Preston murder, sentenced June 18

A monstrous teacher who retched in the dock after being convicted of the murder of little Preston Davey is set for a torrid time in prison, according to an ex-inmate. Wicked Jamie Varley, 37, routinely sexually abused, physically assaulted and took indecent photographs of the baby boy who he had adopted just four months before he suffocated the 13-month-old to death. The spineless man, who wept in Preston Crown Court yesterday (June 15), was found guilty of murder , two counts of assault by penetration,
five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm and sexual assault of a child. Depraved high school teacher Varley was also convicted of 13 counts of taking indecent photos or videos of a child, one of distributing an indecent photo of a child and one of making an indecent photo. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was found guilty of two counts of child cruelty and one count of sexual assault of a child — as well as allowing the death of a child.
Preston’s “pure evil” foster parents subjected the tot to months of physical and sexual abuse — resulting in 40 traumatic injuries. The unhinged pair will be sentenced on Thursday (June 18) — and one former inmate spoke to this reporter about what Varley can expect now that he has been found guilty. Rich Jones, a former British Army veteran who served seven years for conspiracy to supply cocaine, has warned that given Varley’s crimes involved the horrific abuse of a child, he will be a
target. He explained: “These are the worst. The lowest of ones. Like Ian Watkins, the one from Lost Prophets, he’s on that kind of level isn’t he.” Rich then suggested that Varley would be dispatched to a high security Category A prison, speculating it might be somewhere akin to Wakefield’s infamous ‘Monster Mansion’. He added: “He will need to be under protection because he will be got to. And as you see, they get got to anyway, look at Huntley. Ian Watkins was slashed in
the throat a while ago, so they can be found.” Despite likely being placed on a Vulnerable Prisoner (VP) wing, Rich still believes he will have significant reason to fear for his safety. The former inmate, now a published author of his Long Lost Soldier series, said: “With his level of offence, even if he is in segregation, there will be others in there, still really moody offences, but they will still be looking for a bit of kudos to get him because of the
severity of what he has done. “There is even a hierarchy within the sex offenders — and he is at the very bottom of that. So yeah, he will get done.” Providing a blunt insight into what could transpire, he warned: “Another way people will access him is if somebody on the wing has a debt of some kind, and they want a vendetta, the person they owe money to might say, ‘Well look, I will wind your debt off if you go and do
him in your cell.’ “So there’s loads of things that could potentially happen, and none of them are going to be good.” Following Varley’s sentencing, Karen Tonge from the Crown Prosecution Service described it as one of the “most shocking and horrific cases I have dealt with in my career”. She continued: “Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley had a responsibility to care for and protect baby Preston. They violated that responsibility and 13-month-old Preston was abused with sickening ease. “It is difficult to comprehend how
the very people who should have loved him could inflict such sickening physical and sexual harm on an innocent child. “No child should have to go through what Preston went through in the last four months of his short life and I cannot begin to imagine the toll this has taken on those that loved Preston. My thoughts remain with them all.” The court also heard for the first time that Preston’s biological mother is Sarah Davey, who once tortured an elderly person to death
while still a schoolgirl. Preston was taken from his mother under an emergency care order, and she wept in court as 29 guilty verdicts were announced.
